Good thing my first morning cup of coffee was decaf. The only pick-me-up I needed today was found on the front page of my morning newspaper.
There it was in The Times-Tribune...NEPA house prices rose 7.2% last year.
"...things are different in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area, where home prices in 2007 increased 7.2 percent, according to another index released Tuesday. The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight ranked the metro area 18th in home-price gains among the nation's 291 metro areas. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shared the top 20 with other low-profile markets such as Bismarck, N.D., Longview, Wash., and Beaumont, Texas."
Sure it was below the fold. The photo and story of last night's presidential campaign took care of that. But I'll take any good news, regardless of where it appears, as more reinforcement that Northeastern Pennsylvania is a great place to buy a home. I hope buyers are paying attention, especially those who try to offer 20-30% less than the list prices of competitively-priced homes, because the national media has told them of the housing market woes.
I turn the page to more good news. On page 3, there's Scranton's Mayor Doherty behind the podium delivering his State of the City address.
Connecting the Dots is what it's all about, he says. More blighted properties being torn down, 30 in West Scranton alone. And who isn't excited about next year's opening of the new Commonwealth Medical College? The mayor claimed it's the first new medical school in 50 years. I know it's been a while, but half a century? Wow! And for all those NASCAR fans coming to the Poconos in June - a festival hosted by Scranton just for you.
Good news at a great time of year. Might even bring a smile to Dwight's face.
