Reflections from my Back Porch on a Brisk Saturday Morning!

Cold Back Porch

A quick check of my porch thermometer revealed a temperature of -10ºF with a strong wind. Back safely inside, an on-line weather check told me the wind is northwesterly at 20mph and the wind chill factor is a very brisk -33ºF! Time to work on my winter tan!

I really need my porcelain mug of organically & shade grown, fair trade, Sumatran-blend coffee to warm my semi-frozen hands, and to warm my insides!

Friday I took a short road-trip up along US Highway 8 from Forest Lake through Chisago City and Lindstrom to Center City. I had some business in Center City to take care of. I DID borrow a “digicamera” from Medford, however, so I have a few frigid travel photos to share for our Southern Friends to enjoy:

Downtown Chisago City

Chisago City is the first of three towns along US 8 that represent the Swedish immigration to Minnesota.

US 8 between Chisago City & Lindstrom

US 8 has been one of the most dangerous stretches of two-lane highways in the state. It is a heavily travelled corridor from Wisconsin to Interstate Highway 35.

Downtown Lindstrom

Look at the water tower.

Center City

The building in the center was once a Hudson auto dealer.

Ice Fishing

Icehouses on North Center Lake.

This short trip had an added benefit of a stop at my favorite Swedish bakery in Lindstrom, The Linstrom Bakery!

Today I will venture out to find a nice new "Digicamera!"

REMEMBER—THERE IS NOW NEW CODGER-CRAP (thanks a lot Linda!) FOR SALE!

Good morning Jay!  I love your downtown photos - small city downtown areas are one of my favorite things when I think of architecture and urban planning - then the big developers come to try to take advantage of the mixed use and mess them up.  I think it's warming up over there......NOT!

Jay...

I must tell you...I do not miss any of this. Having grown up in the moutains of N.H. I've seen my fair share of snowy small town life.

If I ever went to back to where there is snow it would kill me. I think my blood would freeze :)

Nice pictures though :)

TLW: Ines is quite correct—I do post temps for warm-climate friend’s amusement!

Ines: -13ºF is colder than -10ºF! The temp has been dropping.

Ines: No harm—just fun. We are accustomed to thinking in reverse in sub-zero weather lower numbers = warmer temps. Gonna get down to -14ºF tonight, high tomorrow -1ºF. Ahhhhh, finally some macho winter temps—now we need a blizzard!

Thank you so much for sharing, I love seeing other parts of the Country.  I am going to my home town today, and plan to take some pictures and share as well.

I love the pictures. Small towns are great. The highest building in the town we live in is 2 stories and we only have one that is that height. Our town is so small the hardware store advertises "chicks for sale" on their sign out front and they really ARE chickens! Their side walk sale consists of bales of hay and horse feed.

Bob: I’m a city-boy, my home town is St. Paul, MN. These three towns are about 30 miles north of the Twin Cities. The three are rapidly becoming “urbanized” because of their proximity to the ‘Cities.

BB: Antique and tourist shops have replaced most of the farm-centric stores & shops. Lots of good fishing lakes in the area bring in visitors. Many of the former weekender’s lake cabins have been converted to year-round homes. I love the Teapot water tower in Lindström, a close-up I forgot to upload, 'til now:

I love the water tower! And I checked out the bakery; what is a swedish doughnut and how does it differ from a regular doughnut ? Just curious. I love the photos especially the water tower!

Carole:  I'm not sure, I’m kind of a creature of habit—their chocolate-covered doughnuts are to die for—and maybe of! I bought a couple of loaves of “Irish Molly” bread, a loaf of cinnamon bread (great toasted), and a loaf of cinnamon-raisin for Teresa & Jack (I don’t much care for raisins in bread). Oh and two-for-the-road chocolate-covered doughnuts—shh.
