We had nasty weather tonight. Lots of heavy winds which led to downed trees, power lines, etc. A major road (Route 100) around
There is a quick neighborhood shortcut, through Marchwood that will take you from Rt 100 to Rt 113. So off I went.... problem was, the car in front of me was driving aggravatingly slow! I wanted to rip around it and take off.
I took a deep breath, and started putting my signals on in advance of the turn, hoping the person in front would take my clues that I would lead them through, just follow me (from in front :)
They pulled over to the side. It was dark, and its a place that takes lots of bends & turns. I get mixed up sometimes - and I travel it often! I pulled up next to them, turned my interior light on so they could see me.
"Would you like some help"
"No we ----"The driver gentleman began. "Yes! That's so nice" The woman next to him jumped in, interrupting the independent LOST person. "I'm headed to 113, it gets tricky in here, but you can follow me" "No - - - " He started refusing again! "That would be very nice. Thank you", said the passenger. So off we went. She must have ripped him a good one, cause he did follow me.
I've learned quite the knacks to leading (and following) when it comes to driving. There are things that perhaps aren't the safest - but they do keep your vehicles together. Keeping the appropriate distance between vehicles, making sure there is room/time for BOTH of you to pull out from a turn, flagging the other people to go first at 4-way stops, not stopping at stops (we won't mention what the guy behind me did tonight towards the end of our venture, I think he really didn't want to lose me at that point).
I was tired. Little One (4) was already asleep in the back of the van, I wanted to get right home. But I thought of me in a situation like that. The road was closed (major road), there weren't any detour signs, the neighborhood shortcut wasn't an easy one..... I should help.
I turned out of my "home" direction so that I could get them back to 100/113, however, saw they turned into a shopping center (McDonald's) before the intersection. I didn't try to find them again. Either they figured out where they were, or they thought maybe McDonald's could set them straight.
What's the point? Take 10 minutes to think about someone besides yourself. / Get good at people following you (and being the follower). / Accept help when it is offered to you - its
This doesn't only apply to driving. When you are stuck in your career and someone offers to help - say, "Thank you, that would be great". It doesn't mean that you are a failure, it just means that someone is offering to reach out and help you - let them! (Be sensible here, this doesn't mean to take advice from everyone. Make sure they know what they are talking about!)
