New real estate tax exemptions for Veterans and people with Disabilities

Starting 2008 there are three new real estate tax exemption for home owners in the state of Illinois. The first two have to deal with Veterans with Disabilities or there spouses. The third new exemption has to do with people with Disabilities. I understand this new exemption very well. In 1989 I was diagnosed with a form of Muscular Dystrophy and have had to wear leg braces on both of my legs in order to walk without falling. For those of us that have a Disabled parking pass from the state of Illinois is because we can not go 200 feet without help  a wheelchair or a walking device like a walker, crutches or leg braces etc. If this is true for you all you have to do is log onto the Secretary if Illinois website at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/there you will find a disability form that you can down load and send to your doctor. Have your doctor fill it out and return it to you so that you can mail it along with a copy of your drivers license to the Champaign County assessors office in Urbana. Just like your homestead exception gives you a credit of $5000 off your assessed value, this new Disability exemption will save you $2500 off of you tax assessed value. This exemption must be applied for each year but is well worth time to save on real estate bill. If you have any questions or comments I can be conntacted at tom@soltec.net or 217-352-5700
