My father always said you meet the right people playing golf and bridge. At the time he said this I was a rebellious sixties-era teenager who thought his remarks smacked of elitism and snobbery. I carefully eschewed both pursuits. Now that I am a lot older and a little bit wiser , I see the sense of this and many other of his ideas.
If you are single like me and moving to Florida to start a new life, two of the best way to make new friends are to play bridge and golf.
If you move to Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Estero, Bonita Springs or Naples (my stomping grounds), you will find many bridge clubs right in your neighborhood. It doesn't matter if you are a raw beginner or a contract whiz, you will find the right group for you. And though I don't know exactly why, people who play bridge do turn out to be the right people: kind, intellegent and dependable.
Now about golf: I had never played and felt I was too old to learn. I was encouraged to join a singles golf group and finally gave in. After a couple of meetings I went out on the course and actually played my first eighteen holes. I was terribly nervous about doing this; thought I would be laughed at and booed off the course. But the people I played with could not have been kinder or more helpful. The people in this group are among the nicest and most sincere I have ever met. Now I'm off to the driving range every chance I get and I am actually making progress.
Daddy was right...again!!
