Porter Ranch K-8 Span School Under Development!  Is it true?

One of many Community meetings has been held recently to discuss the progress of the proposed K-8 span school to be built in Porter Ranch. On February 26, 2007 the latest meeting was held at Germain Middle School to meet the chosen Architect, Rikki Binder FAIA Architecture and Planning,  and to allow our Porter Ranch community to express ideas we have for the new school.

To answer you first questions, Yes! it looks like we really might have a school built here in Porter Ranch.  But when?  As we all know, Rome was not built in one day and neither will our school.  It takes many years of planning by the LAUSD to build a school.  The construction of the school will not begin until 2010.  If all goes well the school will be ready to open its doors in the fall of 2012.

However, it does seem like LAUSD is doing everything in their power, with the help and urging of S&S Construction to fast track the school.   The site has been chosen and approved and the school will be built on 12.5 acres at the Southeast corner of Mason and Sesnon.  They have also conducted the Environmental Impact Report.   They are now working on the design of the school and hopefully next month we will have a meeting to review the high level Schematic Design.

At the pre-design meeting many important and intelligent ideas were brought forth to the organizers and architect for the school.   Some of which included the need to consider the high wind and fire hazard area we live in.  The Development team also confirmed they have taken into consideration earthquake hazards.  Other concerns included a need for a good flow of traffic to drop off and pick up the children, classrooms with enough storage for teachers, a need for a multi purpose room that would be used not only for the school but the community, and for the school to be wired appropriately for the ever changing technology we live in.

This is an important time in the development process of our new school.  If you are interested in the school and one day might have children who attend the school, now is the time to get involved.  We can help mold this school into one of the best schools LAUSD has ever produced.  For more information you can visit the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council's website at prnc.org.

Hey Melissa -  Welcome to the rain.  I don't know much about elementary schools, what's a span school?  Is that a dumb question?  Anyhoo, it's good to see you here!

What's a span school?

Not a dumb question at all!  I didn't know what a span school was either until it was proposed for Porter Ranch.  A span school is a combined elementary and middle school which consists of kindergarten through 8th grade.  You are basically getting two schools out of one.  I'm excited about this because I have two boys who will attend the school once it's built.  It is comforting to me to know they will be together on the same campus.  My boys are two years apart so it also means I won't have to drive them around to two different schools.  It's especially nice if they are playing sports or have other after school activities.  I'll only have one drop off!  I also hear some children do better in a K-8 span school because there is no strange transition from elementary school into a new and different middle school.

When I was at the meeting the other day a few question came up about older kids picking on the younger students because they will be sharing the same campus.  But be assured even though they share the same school they won't always be in the same areas.  Activities like lunch and recess are held at different times according to their grades and even though they will be sharing the same spaces they won't be commingled.

Hope that answers your question!  I'll be attending the other meetings and will post more about the school on my blog!
