Two urls with the same content

i hired an SEO company to help me improve my rankings.  i have two different url's that point to the same website.  i've done a little research and i'm thinking this is a big problem but my website designer tells me that i have more traffic going to my old website so i should just leave both live.  can someone in the know please comment.
