Social Media isn't ..... maybe?

Phone and paper

We live in a whole different world filled with "social" media.  We use email, text messages, Facebook, twitter and other media to communicate.

We seldom make social phone calls or have face to face meetings.  Ralph and I are as guilty as anyone.  We frequently sit across from each other at a dining table with him working on his Ipad and me working on my Mini.

Whatever happened to conversation?  It went away so gradually I did not notice..  Talk about absorbed in our own little worlds!

Talk would be interesting!  We share everything 24/7, but we are ceasing to communicate.  How can it be?

It appears that the computers, iPads and other personal communication devices are so dominating our every waking minute that we are slipping into a less responsive society.

Social?  Not the skills I was taught!  Communication?  Well, it does keep us in touch with family friends and customers.  I guess that does qualify as communication and it is via media.  It is not as responsive as the old fashioned conversation and it feels a lot less personal.

It well could be that we are approaching a day when we will have to have a personal computer or equivalent to communicate at all.  Instead of talking with the person across the room we will just text.  Scary!

I recently texted my son who was sitting on the other side of the couch because he was so involved in his phone that he wasn't paying attention to me. It was funny, but sad. On the other hand, I love that I can text my daughter 400 miles away and talk with her any time I like.

And when the GRID goes down what do we do? It is a scary thought that nobody, including the government, cares to think about, let alone prepare. It is going to happen and it is only a matter of time. I see your blog going into the future with technology and everything going just right.  THINK!

I can attribute over 100 closings this year due to social media. For me the key is not just information that is beneficial to the potential client, it is about creating an emotional resonance with them. Doing this creates a call to action. I try as much as possible to emphasis value based business and telling a personal story. For instance with investment real estate I talk more about having retirement income or paying for a child's college education versus just positive cash flow. In this way I have been privileged to connect with people within and outside this country.

I think social media has really helped in our type of business, along with all the other technology we use to sign contracts and open doors.  Great post, thanks for sharing.

Scary because we have a whole generation growing up without learning to really communicate with the world around them in person. They lose the their sense of empathy for each other in this process.

I prefer to pick up the phone and talk to someone. Tech tools are great but face to face is much better.

I keep saying that real estate is all about actually getting in front of someone.  The younger generation thinks everything is done through social media but I think that's just the first step, you actually have to get in front of that person eventually.

Jeanne and Ralph, I think we just need to take a look at the younger generation to see that they are already communicating more through their devices than through theirs mouths even when they are in the same room!

Still recall sitting in a restaurant and overheard a conversation at the next table - 5 business men having lunch. "Well, what exactly is EMAIL...?" That was a few years back AND LOOK HOW FAR WE HAVE COME - No one needs to talk to anyone anymore! All we need to do is text - even when we are in the same room :-) Still, it seems there is lots of faster-pace communication going on. Thing to remember is perhaps - everything in balance.

Jeanne and Ralph, Social Media is here to stay and is not bad if used properly.  I have a business page and all my listings filter through and I can up date it often to generate more activity.  Period.  That is the extent of my time on Facebook.  I know people who will stay on it for hours so that I wonder if they work or what.  Social Media is all it is about for the younger generation.

When I am out to lunch with friends or family my iPhone stays in my purse and out of sight.  I've learned that most of our business is not emergencies and can wait until we are done with the real life.

I try and turn off my phone at intervals and train myself not to respond to every ding of the phone that indicates a new messgae or email has come thru - especially when I'm with others in a face to face situation..  The world won't come to an end if I respond within the house, as opposed to this minute.

It is a little scary to think about. I don't how many times I am in a restaurant and in the tables around me everyone is just on their phone when the conversation dies down and they don't try to revive it because they can just escape to their phones. We essentially inhabit two worlds but which one will win over in the end?

I have a midweek gathering of friends we call Wine'down Wednesdays. Just the core group getting together and for inexpensive wine ($10ish a bottle limit) and a little break. We noticed the smartphone-zombie thing starting to pop up, so now upon entry we all drop the smartphones into a big empty fish bowl. If it's ringing and dinging off the hook then yes, obviously it's important and gets its proper attention, but otherwise its a nice way to make sure the social part of the evening doesn't get overpowered by the social media part of our lives.

I'm guilty of all that plus texting a person who is in the same room.  That's usually when others are present and we want to talk "privately"  :)
