What's with this "Open Concept" floor plan?
There will always be a variety of house designs and for that we should be grateful. No matter how some concepts may change there will always be styles that remain popular year after year. Through the years I have lived in an assortment of homes and enjoyed them all. There are times in your life that one style may work better for you than others. Right now newer homes have what are commonly called Great Rooms combining what was once the kitchen, dining room and living room into one very large space. There are also some areas where lifestyles are more casual and the open concept works well.
What's this "Open Concept" floor plan?
Is it a fad created by HGTV? Or is it the future for the long term?
It's Saturday night. OK, so I don't have a date. I'm in front of my television set with HGTV.
On Househunters International, a happy couple just bought their dream beach condo in Mexico, with "Open Concept" floor plan being at the top of their list. Now it's Love It or List It, and the disgruntled family have the closed-in kitchen at the top of their list of what they don't like.
My house is old fashioned, with dysfunctional kitchen space that some non-cook designed about a hundred years ago. The dining room is huge, designed for Sunday dinners with the extended family. Knocking out the wall, um supporting wall, between the dining room and kitchen could create interesting possibilities. But I'm not sure that I want an Open Concept space.
When I cook, I'm a complete slob about it. And it sometimes takes me days after a dinner party to get the mess loaded into the dishwasher. Now there is a possibility that, should the kitchen be open to the world, my habits might improve. But would it be my real preference?
When I entertain, I do have to have the food thing under control before any guests arrive if i want to be part of the party.
I love my "formal" dining room. It might be pretty retro, but so am I. When I sell my house some day, the cute young trendy buyers might knock down the wall, or they might stay formal and expand the kitchen out to the back porch. I guess that will depend on whether Open Concept is still popular when they cart me out of here. And only time will tell.
Oh! And did HGTV create this trend or what?
