REALTOR or Real Estate Agent?

Last week I spoke to a group of wealth managers, financial advisors, and hedge fund types in New York. I started my presentation with the question "What's the difference between a Realtor © and a Real Estate Agent?” Of the 150 in the room, no one, not one, knew the answer. In fact the consensus was that they are the same, that a Realtor © means nothing more than being an agent.

The question and answer session at the end of my session was a lively one. Turns out that a lot of confusion is out there on this topic.  It appears that there’s also no perceived difference between an agent and a broker, “Isn’t that the same too?” said one, and even worse “What does it matter what they are called? The majority can’t be trusted, there’s no ethics involved whatever they want to call themselves.” This coming from a banker, like he can talk!

Regardless, how do we overcome this confusion? Any Ideas?

A agree with Carol.  I like to tell people that NAR had a Code of Ethics before any other professions other than medicine, law and engineering - going back to 1913.  You can be licensed, but by becoming a REALTOR you agree to the Code of Ethics.

This would be a good blog topic for the public.  The difference between a REALTOR(r), real estate agent and Broker.  Indiana just changed our state law, going into effect July 1 2014 that ALL agents are called Broker's because the general public doesn't know the difference.  What is now called the Principal Broker will be called Managing Brokers and we have to take more CE than a Broker.

I like Robert's comment.  Of course, one of my pet peeves is the misuse of the word REALTOR®.  You either are one or you aren't.  You aren't a (insert city and state) REALTOR® or a full or part time REALTOR®.  That's when the term real estate agent should be used.  REALTORS®  are real estate professional sworn to follow the Code of Ethics.  If a particular REALTOR® wants to designate themselves with a particular locale or skill set, they will need to use the title on their license to accompany that.
