Networking Basics: 8 Tips To Networking Without Being Fake

Networking - We all know we need to to it but for some reason we never get around to it. Why? Are we busy?  Are we afraid or uncomfortable? Do you have another reason you don't network?

Strong relationships can make a huge difference in how fast and how satisfied you are on the road to success. Networking is how you meet people and start building strong relationships.

So - What is the goal of networking? It may not be what you think.

James Clear wrote a post in the Passive Panda titled "24 networking tips that actually work."

He states that:

"The real goals of networking should be to help other people. Yes, it would be nice if they helped you out as well, but networking is a two-way street. And your side of the street is all about helping others, not asking them to help you. Asking for favors should only become a possibility once you have learned more about the person and provided some value to them."

and

'It's far more important to understand their needs before you tell them about your needs. Your goals should not be to on the forefront of you mind. You are trying to develop a relationship with someone, which means you should be thinking about them. It's your job to understand the people in your network, where they are coming from, and what's important to them."

I think you'll enjoy this video by Marie Forleo where she talks about Networking Basics: 8 Tips To Networking Without Being Fake.

Hope you've enjoyed these tips and they help you have fun establishing new relationships and friendships through networking.

First Impressions are made at First Click

Networking does not come naturally to a lot of people so these tips are helpful.

One thing that I learned to do is keep a supply of business cards, thank you cards and pre-stamped envelopes in my car.

After leaving a networking event, I get in my car and before driving away I write a brief thank you note to the most significant (top 1-3) people I met at the event and drop them in the mailbox on the way home.

This personal touch goes a long way to generating referrals and creating a lasting impression on people.

Randy - I'm also big on saying thank you. I don't keep a stash of cards in my car but I do send cards all the time. i do them with a system I use on the computer. It allows me to send a personalized card via "snail mail" without leaving the house. I call it Appreciation Marketing. You can learn more about it at Create Custom Cards.

Alan, this is a very good post.  I have not been a big networker because I never want people to feel that I am talking to them just for the sake of future business.  I like youd premise of being a helper.  That is much more palatable to me.

Great video on networking. I think she really breaks it down well and offers great tips. It always seems a lot easier than it feels when you are doing it, but I like her techniques. Thanks for sharing.
