Having to field all of the decisions, designs, colors, and contractors coming in and out, the mess and turmoil can lead to a high level of stress. Nick good advice.  Given the choice between the two, I would much rather purchase than renovate.

Nick, many years ago, we renovated and I promised myself to never do it again! It's not easy to renovate while living in the house, I'm with George, I very much prefer to purchase.

Nick, interesting post and suggested.  I was planning to change the MBR...the tub is too deep and hard to get in and out of, don't like the tile, etc.  May just wait on this as I can live with the tile and just not use the tub :)

George-every home that I bought has been a remodel.  It has been a good way to build equity with a little "elbow grease".  I've had enough of the dirt and and mess of construction...my next home will be turn key!

Beth-I couldn't agree more.

Debbie-yes there are lots of choices and the decision to remodel or buy new will be a personal one, but for me...I'm done with remodels.

Rebecca-if you have another bathroom to use...having one under construction isn't quite so bad, but you till have to deal with contractors and the mess during the remodel.

John-thanks and I'm with you.  I've gutted, bathrooms, kitchens, raised entire ceilings and roofs...so I've had my fun with remodels and renovations and don't want that kind of fun anymore.

Nick, this is so funny - I am trying to do some remodeling right now.   The projects are almost overwhelming, and sounds easier to just move!

A client of mine, recently contact me and asked the same questions, buy or renovate. In his case the answer was pretty simple, he had to buy another home. The renovation would have made the home overbuilt for the neighborhood and they would be living in the home 6-8 years and then would need to sell.

Joan-I've been through it several times and sometimes wonder if it's worth it in the end...all the dust and inconvenience.  Upgrading or updating is one thing, but full renovations is quite something else.

Joe-great point!  You certainly don't want to over improve...just throwing good money after bad.  There are, of course neighborhoods where you can over improve all you want and the area will sustain it, but most of us live in the real world where "contribution" has limits.

Nick - Excellent post about whether to sell or remodel your Madison and Huntsville Alabama home! I Love the question you ask in the middle - "How Strong is your Marriage"? That is a very good point. Remodeling can often be more stressful than building because you're dealing with an existing home and more attachments.

Great job!

I'm not sure about the grand remodeling, but at least, some touch ups and some updated appliances would help to sell faster and on a better terms.
