How Many Other Websites Need This?

Sitting at my keyboard this afternoon making updates to a client's web copy, I started wondering... How many other real estate websites need similar attention?

How many real estate websites need...

  • Updates to agent designations or awards?
  • Updates to reflect changes in email addresses or telephone numbers?
  • New copy to reflect the changing seasons... are your buyer or seller pages still talking about Spring?
  • Addition or removal of links to outside articles?
  • Addition of testimonials received over the past few months?
  • Addition of links to Active Rain blog posts?
  • "Share" buttons on exceptional articles?
  • Changes to articles that mention out-of-date statistics?

Making these changes can be a huge job if your site includes a lot of pages - and right now you're busy. You don't have time to take a whole day at the computer. So why not create a system for getting this done over the next few weeks?

Make a promise to yourself and set aside 10 or 15 minutes in the morning or evening to read and correct just one page on your site. (Keep a list, so you'll remember which you've updated.) Then if you have extra time and feel like continuing, fix one more - or two more.

If you know you're only promising yourself to sit down for 10 or 15 minutes rather than 4 or 5 hours, you'll probably get it done.

And before you know it, your website will be fresh and ready for the fall and winter seasons.

I'd like to think I could do this in 20min's each morning - but I'm sure I'd get sucked in and two hours later I'd be updating page three or four... But I've put it on my list - as well as testing links etc. and I'm going to emply some reserve and plan for 20 minutes!  thanks for the motivation... cheers,

I was looking at my Dana Point Real Estate Agent website yesterday, and noticed it says "Department of Real Estate" instead of "Bureau of Real Estate" on the Contact Raymond page.  That's a recent change in California, and I've got to correct it

This is the kind of stuff that wakes me up at night.  I forgot to update my site area for this, or that, etc.  It keeps rolling.  Thanks for bringing it to light this morning.  I need help.

Such a good point. Sometimes we feel the task is too daunting and overwhelming so we decide not to even tackle it when if we took it step by step we would ifnd it's not as bad as we thought.

Great reminder to update things a little at a time. It could also be passed on to a team member that works with your websites!

I'm about to put this sort of directive out to my agents next week so they can get their websites working better for 2014 lead generation.

Michelle, Christine, and Debbie - Thanks!

Rob - Sorry to give you more work to do.

Gary - We're working on my client's site now to make the copy timeless - but I don't think it can be accomplished on every page.

Jeff - My client agrees. He barely has time to scan the updates.

Marina - So true. If we'd take 15 minutes every day to clear out clutter, wash one wall or window, etc. our homes would look much nicer.

Andrew - Somethng that has me puzzled lately is finding blogs in the #1 position on Google - and seeing that there's been no new post in 2 or 3 years.

Kim - Most of us do!

Jerril and Nancy - Figuring out how is always the first step.

Chris and Dick - I agree, but if you're going to list them, they do need to be current.

Matt - One of those things you'll never have completely finished.

Ed & Tracy - Thanks.

Richard - I'm good at kicks in the pants.

Michael - Thanks.

Patricia - Tracking your changes is important - so you don't cover the same ground twice.

Richie _ I always think about making things simple, but haven't figured it out completely yet.

Andrew - Yes, you want those links going to the right place!

Roger - You might get the impression that the agent wasn't paying attention.

Elise - Nothing wrong with spending a couple of hours if you can spare them. Getting started is easier, however, if you only promise to stay a short while.

Raymond - That was one of things I've had to change for my client. Why the change in terminology?
Did it serve a useful purpose, or just create a reason for brokers to have to update cards, letterhead, etc?

Jay and Michelle - Waking up at night worrying about this stuff is NO fun!

Trisha - You remember the old saying about how you eat an elephant. One bite at a time.

Gerard - Passing it to a team member would be a real time saver - for you!

Bryan - Good idea! I love special reports and "capture boxes" for that. Also love autoresponders for keeping in consistent touch with those leads.

Marte, I been updating profiles so I can add social media tabs to my website. I don't refer to seasons on my website pages. I write monthly market reports that help with that. I can be very specific on those and not have to update them every few months. I spend a few days a month updating pages. This is usually in the new construction neighborhoods where things are changing quickly because of the increase in new home sales.

>>Did it serve a useful purpose

Nobody I've spoken to can think of a good reason ... it didn't have to happen.  We can use DRE until our inventory is exhausted, then we have to switch to BRE.  But websites and other stuff like that should happen sooner.

Gita - You're welcome!

Tammie - Good idea. Dated reports don't need to be changed.

Laura - Just one more thing to do thanks to our wonderful computers.

Suzanne - Yes, at least that.

Raymond - That's good news. At least you don't have to toss things you've paid for.

Marte you have such a good point in your blog. How easy it is to let time slip away and let your site get out of date. To be current in organic searches one must take the time to always update information and content.

Thanks for the reminder.
