At the recent RE/MAX National convention in Las Vegas we were all fortunate to hear many good speakers. Among one of my favorites was an International speaker by the name of Marcus Buckingham. If you ever have the opportunity to hear Mr. Buckingham I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed and will come away with a whole new point of view.
What caught my attention is that Mr. Buckingham says that one of the major problems with our society is that we focus too much on fixing ours and other's weaknesses rather than focusing on and building up our strengths.
Mr. Buckingham used these excellent examples to make his point:
Students:
When a child brings home a report card with a couple of "A's", some "B's", and a "C" or "F", most parents freak out over the "F" and focus on that grade. An option he stated was to congratulate them on the "A" and find out why they excelled in that class. Find out what their passion is and what motivates them to do so well in their favorite classes. When the child realizes the interest you have in them they will likely work hard to bring up the "F" to a much better grade.
Personal Relationships:
How many of us want to change the person we are with and make sure and try and fix their weaknesses? Mr. Buckingham says this is the common denominator to many failed relationships. Instead of focusing on each others weaknesses, lets embrace each others strengths and accept that everyone has both weaknesses and strengths.
Ourselves:
If we were not organized at the age of 19 there is a good chance we will not be organized at the age of 50. Instead of dwelling on becomming an organized person, don't be afraid to ask for help with that weakness. Instead of beating yourself up over any weakness, embrace your strengths and learn that those strengths are unique to you and make you special. Focus on building up the strengths you know you have.
This was a fascinating class and many Re/Max agents were talking about it days after the class. It had a big impact on me and really got me to thinking. I hope it helps you and gives you something to think about.
