Labor Day, a Holiday named after Labor, where we Avoid doing any Labor

Labor Day, a Holiday named after Labor, but designed to Avoid labor dayactually doing any Labor.

I do enjoy this little holiday even though I seldom participate in the national goal of avoiding all work on this day.

I like that it is the transition from the hot summer days to the start of our fall season.

A time when people are thinking about getting back to school.

A time when people are thinking about their hunting land, and of course hiring a Forester.

A time for preparing for the cold winter that will be here soon with lots of snow and frozen ground, ideal for fully enjoying all of the best of the NorthWoods.

I have always thought that it was kind of funny that we spend so much time celebrating a holiday designed for laborers when most of us do not really do that much labor, we are now a white collar country that farms it’s labor type jobs out to other countries.

We do have some labor left in our country, the service workers, like the folks who are working this weekend to make sure that those who are taking the weekend off from their white collar jobs have a comfortable vacation.

My advice, turn on your phones, celebrate Labor Day by doing some work, and sell a few homes while your competition snoozes on the beach!

Well, once a holiday is on the books and the Feds have the day off, there's no changing it.  I have always thought we were spoiled by the number of holidays we get anyway.

Here, in Central Arizona, still quite warm and the kids are already back in school (most school districts end the year in May -- vs. June that is typical elsewhere).  On a side note -- I will be 'laboring' today.  what else is new!  :o)

I worked the last two days of this holiday weekend and I'm taking today off to be with my family. Our neighborhood pool closes after today so it is our last chance to swim with the neighbors this season. I hope that all of my fellow ActiveRainers have a safe and relaxing holiday.

A different approach from some other labor day posts I have read today. I like it. Thanks for sharing and reminding us of the hard truths.

Bob, I have to agree that most workers today are not "laborers" in the original sense.  While I do take the day off from the office, I continue working as it's a passion and a love, not "work".

Count me in  as another one for which Labor Day is just another day at the office.  Now, back to work for me.

I don't celebrate labor day because I am a business owner and believe in free markets. Labor day is anything but a celebration of a free market. Then the government even got involved to force many business owners to give this day as a paid day off.  There should be a business owner day! The business owner takes all the risks, lives on peanut butter sandwiches while building their businesses, they have to hire and fire, they make sure everyone gets their pay before they get their own, they do all this to produce a profit - which is now some dirty word. How sad!

I left this comment on another post about labor day:

In homeschool we researched Labor Day and have chosen as a family to instead go to work on innovative projects each Labor Day to celebrate the Entrepreneur spirit. Labor Day roots are grounded in unions of which we are not fond of as free market libertarians:

This is from the US department of Labor:

"Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. ( Italics added)

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

They had my working floor today from 3PM-530. Phone is dead, it's kind of raining now, so I decided to close to shop in 5 minutes.

I left it up to my clients whether or not I would work to day.  100% decided to take the day off, so I did as well.  It was great!

Well, I got my labor in yesterday as I spent about 3 hours waist deep in the ocean trying to catch fish. :)

Bob, I tell people that we work on weekends - and if that is a long weekend, we work longer hours! (And yes, I did work this weekend - and took a little break in-between as many offices were closed and I could not schedule showing appointments for some of my buyers.)

Bob, in my mind labor means any kind of work.  Considering that definition, I did not take the whole day off. I did slow down a bit and hope you did as well.

Never avoid doing something on the to do list, a few things so you can enjoy relaxing is how raised on a farm causes a person to roll. Real estate agents, broker, REALTORS are not known for being lazy and relaxing for many is hard if there is always a list of to do waiting to be done. Or chipped away at it.
