Labor Day - Last Day for the Whites

As children, we learn a lot of things from our parents. They pass down religious, family and holiday traditions. When we question our parents about WHY we do things a certain way they tell us because that's the way it's always been done. My family listens to the Johnnie Mathis and Andy Williams Christmas albums when making cut out Christmas cookies. Why? Because that's how my mother always did it.

When it comes to fashion, I know many people no longer follow the rules that our mothers taught us when we were little girls. Some of these rules tend to attract the same question - Why?

So now that it is Labor Day weekend and I find myself putting away our white clothes. My kids want to know Why? I have no idea why. However, I am certain that it is a faux pas to wear white shoes, purses, belts or pants tomorrow through Memorial Day. White shirts, jackets and sweaters are okay, just not bottoms or accessories.

My mother has moved to Florida where she claims that white is allowed year round because it feels like summer all year. It's weird when your mother breaks the very rules that she taught you.

Well, I live in Maryland, not in Florida so I guess I'll have to pull out the Winter Whites.

Will you be wearing white tomorrow?

Well Dana, a very interesting topic!!  I intend to wear what makes me feel comfortable, today!!  Probably not whites, but my colorful summer clothing, since it will be in the mid-80's, and close to 90 tomorrow.  Summer is still here in Colorado!!  Now, with that being said, it may snow in 2 weeks!!

Dana, being in Florida for the past 3 decades hasn't changed my attitude about white pants after Labor Day.  Just don't do it, but why, I haven't a clue.

Dana, I am with you... I just can't wear white after Labor Day.  It just doesn't feel right.

Yup white works all year long in Phoenix as we're summer almost all year long.  I do remember that ' no white clothing rule' growing us as a kid.  Always thought it was kind of silly.  Kind of like only wearing green on Friday day - which we did in high school at times!

Dan, Kathy, Kevin and Anna - Thanks for commenting. I know it's silly, but the white rule is ingrained in me now. I can't help it :)

Dana, it is hovering near 100 all week this week, so white sounds cooler than most colors.

Joan - Thankfully we are starting to get fall weather so I don't feel the white clothes are necessary yet. Who knows tomorrow it may be 100 here as well.

Dana, this post brings back memories.  We used to do the same.  But like your Mom, here in Florida it's always OK for white.

We make it easy. You make it home.

I wore white on Sunday and Monday just to get it out of my system. Then wore a white shirt on Tuesday, but as you say, as long as it is above the waist it is ok. I agree that in FL anything goes.
