Dates for the Jewish holidays 2013 - the High Holidays
I thought it might be helpful to jot down the dates for the Jewish holidays for 2013. As this is based on the Jewish lunar calendar, the dates vary every year, and this year, they are early, with all of them taking place in September.
Importantly, the holidays start on the eve of the evening before. If you have friends, clients, colleagues who might be celebrating these holidays, it's best to avoid phone calls during these days, especially for the first two - Rosh Hashana (the New Year celebration) and Yom Kppur (day of atonement - the holiest day of the year).
- Rosh Hashana Sept 5th-6th (starts eve of Sept 4th) - The Jewish New Year
- Yom Kippur Sept 14th (starts eve of Sept 13th) -Day of Atonement- many fast during this day and then there is "Break the fast" on the evening of the 15th
- Sukkot Sept 19th-20th (starts eve of Sept 18th) - Feast of the Tabernacles - The harvest
- Shemini Azeret and Simchat Torah Sept 26th-27th (starts eve of Sept 25th) - Celebrating the Torah
In our area, for schools that opened on September 3rd, Thurs and Friday Sept 5th and 6th, schools are closed. Usually, schools are also closed for Yom Kippur, but this year, it falls on a Saturday.

For all my Jewish friends, colleagues and customers, happy holidays!
