Customer: "We want to put laminate on top of hardwood." Me: Are you sure??

My middle appointment of the day was a very sweet older couple.  Absolutely lovely.

refinish and repair hardwood floors westchesterIt seems they had some minor water damage on their hardwood, and they knew the water stain would not come out.  And, they were right.

So they wanted to add laminate flooring on top of the hardwood.  At least, that is what they originally told me.  They had thought things through and at first were very definite with their opinion.

But, as I started to question them more and offer alternative solutions, they were willing to listen.  They didn't realize that it would be possible to replace a small section of wood and weave it in. They also didn't realize that it would be significantly less expensive to refinish the hardwood floors (rather than add laminate on top).

I also explained the other benefits of the hardwood, including that it improves the value of their home - for now and for later when they sell - as well as how it will make their space look larger since it will be the same color and surface as what they have in the bedrooms.

So, hardwood flooring it is!  And, hopefully, we will be repairing and refinishing their hardwood floors soon.

Debbie, I think most people have no idea that it's possible to weave in fresh pieces of hardwood.  A skilled crew can do a lot more than the typical homeowner suspects.

That would be such a shame to cover hardwood with laminate. Laminate is way down on my list of acceptable looks. I bet this couple was really happy to learn they could preserve the hardwood look.

Debbie, I'm sure glad for your clients that they listened carefully to your opinion. Laminate vs. hardwood...hmmmm., let me think.

Thank goodness. What an unfortunate result if you'd let them do what they thought they needed to do!

Bliz  - Yes, I think you're right.  Also, many don't realize that refinishing costs less putting in new flooring.

Debbie - I know...it would cost them more and reduce the value of the home.  Whoever came in would want to rip it up.

Steven - Thx.  That's what I try to do.

Tom - Yes, I'm glad they did too.  I told them that if they want to spend more money they could, but I have no reason to mislead them.  I'm making less money in this scenario, but it's much better for them.

Ruthmarie - I know.  And, certainly not in this neighborhood where everyone wants hardwood (and most houses have it).

Wandanan - Thank you so much.

Brad - Yes, I try to advise them the best I can.

Patricia - tHank you so much.

Kristin - That is so cool.  Thx.

Debbie, they are so lucky they called you. I had a client with very beautiful aged flooring. Dog urine and dog digging in one spot with a tenant. It was repaired and the entire floor refinished. At first the guy thought he would have to weave some wood taken from a closet in, but he was able to work some magic instead. Yes there were a few dips in the floor, but they looked just fine when done. Whew... crisis averted by a good honest person.

Debbie,

Oh how do you sleep after such horror stories... I'm so glad I read this at 6am instead of 9pm... I would have tossed and turned at the thought of laminate over hardwood.  You are VERY good at what you do, I imagine your sources for stories is just about endless!

Cheers,

I can not conceive of putting anything over hard wood. My parents did it many years ago when they put wool carpet over HW.

Great job for talking them into keeping the wood.  You helped them avoid a HUGE mistake!  We all at one time or another discovered someone's design mistake during a remodel.  You know when paint is removed from old doors and you find beautiful wood behind it OR rip up carpet in an old house and find the original wood floors?  Great job Debbie!
