Who says you can only have fun hopping aboard the Candy Crush Train? Wayzata has been celebrating the 39th annual James J. Hills Days, (commonly known as JJ Hills Days) a Wayzata community festival event celebrating Wayzata's railroad baron, James J. Hill. This celebration is packed with fun events and activities such as concerts, markets, contests, parade, fireworks and celebrity appearances done along the shoreline of Lake Minnetonka. This is a whole weekend celebration starting today, September 6, until Sunday, September 8.
The JJ Hills Days fun starts with The Hunt for the Golden Spike, where anyone can participate in finding the elusive Golden Spike which is equivalent to $200 when found. Carnivals such as St. Bart’s “The Gathering Community Carnival” and The Lake Minnetonka Carnival will top the events of the day. Carnival entrance tickets are still selling as hot as ever at Lunds of Wayzata. Our local firemen and policemen are also having a friendly softball game competition at the Klapprich Park.
The JJ Hills Days fun continues on Saturday, September 7 and escalates with more friendly games and competitions such as the Coaster Cart Derby at Indian Mound Street for Kids and World Paddle Sport Championship at Wayzata Bay for canoe, kayak and paddle board enthusiasts. Our furry little Daschunds even have their own Dachshund Races & Flyball Demo happening at Lake Street! Minnesota's very own Stacie Clark, the winner of "Women's Health Next Fitness Star" contest, will be conducting a special Tiger-Fit Session at Lake Street. Other activities at Lake Street include BNSF’s Kids & Family Zone and Dunk Tank. And what's a Lake Minnetonka festival without performing at the Lake? The Waterski Show will feature Flyboard man and other skiing and boat driving expeditions and performances right at Lake Minnetonka.
Entrepreneurs will also have a chance to showcase their businesses during the JJ Hills Days at The Street Market at Lake Street and Friends of the Library Used Book Sale at Wayzata Library for bookworms. The Wayzata Art Experience will also showcase Post Storm artworks.
This day of the JJ Hills Days will be packed with live bands, music and dancing at the Sunsets Parking Lot, Depot Park and Sunsets Stage. After the Fireworks being held by dusk, The Lunds Street Dance will fill Sunsets Stage with music and street style celebration along with Shane Martin Band, Rogue Valley and Jeff Dayton and Friends. The party authority Big & Rich will have the ”Big & Rich Concert at the Beach” which concludes the Saturday event with a dose of their chart-topping party soundtrack.
As the Lake Minnetonka Carnival, Street Market, Wayzata Art Experience and Used Book Sale continue to operate on JJ Hills Days on the next day Sunday, September 8, more shows will showcase more fun activities such as the Parade, Climbing Wall and Charity Motorsports Show at Lake Street, Garden Railroad at Depot Park and the anticipated Steamboat Minnehaha 45 min. Cruises at Depot Docks. Food Trucks and Beer Garden will continue to operate at the Sunsets Parking Lot while the Round House 4 Band at Depot Park will provide music at Lake Street.
