Ahoy, Tall Ships Arrive in Erie, PA

Tall Ships Erie, PA

Sunny skies, calm seas with just enough breeze hailed the Tall Ships as they sailed across Lake Erie.

A replica of Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship, the U.S. Brig Niagara, led the parade of nine tall ships through the channel into Presque Isle Bay. I was one of thousands who lined Presque Isle Bay and the Erie Bayfront to see the Parade of Sails.

Last weekend the tall ships took part in re-enactment of Battle of Lake Erie at Put-in-Bay. The young US Navy under the command of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the powerful British navy near Put-in Bay, Ohio on Sept. 10, 1813. The fleet was built in Erie by Daniel Dobbins.

Myrly, I am glad that I was able to feed your love of pirates. When Hunter, now 12, was only four he used to refer to the Niagara the 'pirate ship.' (Niagara is home ported in Erie.)

Good idea, Laura. I am sure a few kids and kids-at-heart will want to do that this weekend.

Bob, I must confess to being a 'history buff.'

Toni, I can only imagine the tall ships coming into Tampa Bay. Let me know ahead of time so we can plan to be there.

Living on the Great Lakes has its benefits and seeing the tall ships is high on the list. See the links for additional photos that have been added each day. The ships leave this evening or in the morning, but our memories will last a long time.

Mary... We are so blessed here in the Puget Sound Region to have so many visits every year from the tall ships. They hold such a wonderful place in my heart and imagination. The kid in me lives forever imagining sailing in one of these majestic ships. One of my big thrills was to spend the afternoon and evening on the Lady Washington. What a treat! Great post!

Rene, you are truely lucky to see the tall ships every year. Erie, PA has the Brig Niagara berthed here in Erie, but she sails to other ports to participate in their events. Last year I was able to see the ships in Baltimore Harbor. Awesome!
