So Sorry You Had To See That

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty Elite

"So sorry you had to see that" were my words to my client as we immediately backed out the door of showing a home yesterday.

When we pulled up to the house, there were no cars outside and the key was in the lockbox.  The house was vacant, but as I always do, knocked on the door, opened it and said “Real Estate”. We entered the home and heard low voices as we walked down the hallway. Upon entering the master bedroom, a teenage couple was having a good time.  They did not even notice we were there – thankfully.   My client and I looked at each other, turned around and walked out the front door.  Red faced and trying to find the right words, this was all I could come up with at the time. To my amazement, my client was taking this all very well and kind of snickering as we walked out to put the house key into the lockbox.  We then walked to the car, and both just laughed out loud and she said “Well, someone is getting more action in that room than I would”.  There were just not words to say at that point and I was glad she had a sense of humor about it.

We talk about safety while showing homes to our clients, and I have to say that I am prepared for that.  However, this was something I was not prepared for and would not have expected to see.  All the continuing education and training in the world would not have prepared me for that one.

We are going back out to look at a couple more homes today. I can honestly say that I hope today is uneventful!

I remember years ago going to an apt for a showing.  A call was placed in advance and I also buzzed the apt and lastly rang the door buzzer.  We walked in and I saw a flash of a body run from, I assume the bathroom to the bedroom.  It was a real sight to see.  I told the owner that calls were made and also rang two times from the intercomm and door.  We all chuckled after showing the apt (she got dressed real quick).  My customer took it in stride.

No fun! At least you were with another woman and not with one of those guys who would have made you even more uncomfortable with his comments. I've shown homes to a few I would not have wanted to be with in that situation.

I've heard these stories but never experienced anything quite like that in all my years.  At least you got a good story to tell.

Dear Lori,

Vacant houses can have surprises. I always try to be loud & announce myself several times, because I had someone come out of the shower once. No idea, who it was. Apparently not the owner.

I'm sure you were beat red and embarassed!  Good thing your client took it so lightly.  Apparently, they had no idea you were there and hopefully won't do that again.  Best of luck!

Streakers!!  Owners running naked from the shower.  Also walked in on the owner in the shower singing.  The client and I left very quietly so he never knew we were there.  All of these were with calls ahead to let them know, but sometimes an answering machine dioesn't get checked.  Gotta keep your sense of humor.

Lori, that's not something I'd ever like to see at any showing appointment. And I wonder how did they get in anyways?

Lori I have walked in on the act as well but this couple didn't seem to mind they actually got up and put on their silky robes and stood there. Yikes!

Included in my incidents with clients are, someone in the shower that walked out (birthday suit and all) exactly as we were entering the apartment. Of course I knocked before but they couldn't hear in the bathroom. Can you say awkward?

A husband and wife decided to have the fight of a lifetime while I was showing their condo.

I showed a condo and on the glass coffee table lay the remains of a very large party that had recently taken place.

It's like a surprise party selling Real Estate, each time out you just never know! Good luck!

Wow, that's a great story!  Glad your clients took it well.  One time I opened a door to a room in a house...full of marijuana plants growing under blacklights!

What an awkward moment and doesn't happen often. Still, good reminder of what could be 'beyond that lockbox.'

Just goes to show you should always have a camera in your pocket for several reasons. In my case it was the neighbor kid using the house for party time and he was ticked off when I contacted his parents about the breaking and entering, and informed the listing agent that some showings besides mine may have been affected.

This happened many years ago locally. Only it was the listing agent with his secretary, and the Seller came home early from vacation. Shocks heard round the town.
