As any Miami local knew before the game even began, the winner was….
Miami who won the game 21 to 16!
According to sources, Saturday’s University of Miami Hurricanes game vs the University of Florida Gators was the last time the rivals will meet on the fieldwhich made the game an historic occasion.
The rivalry started 75 years ago and, for all intents and purposes, the Gators pulled the plug on it Saturday. Forever.
Although it saddens many lifelong college football fans from the State of Florida, fiscally it makes sense for UF not to play Miami again in the regular season. Since the SEC is likely moving to a nine-game conference schedule and the Gators already committed to playing Florida State, this leaves UF with only two remaining games.
The Gators want to play those two games at home at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, where a UF official says they net about $2.5 million per game.
"People don't want to hear this, but it's the fact of the matter," UF Athletic Director Jeremy Foley told the Associated Press earlier this week. "When you take a home game out of here, it cost you significant dollars. ... You can't do that every other year and try to run a sports program at the level we're trying to run it. I think everybody thinks that's not a big deal. Well, it is a big deal."
In fact, SunLife Stadium was sold out on Saturday with the average ticket price on the secondary market costing $186.89. Even parking passes went for more than $100. The cheapest seats in the upper deck went for over $122 and club seats for at least $598, per ticket.
Of course there are also competitive reasons the Gators wouldn’t want to keep playing the Canes, but hopefully you were lucky enough to attend and took lots of pictures at the historic game.
