When it comes to relocation Grand Rapids and the surrounding communities offer so many options, and many of them are “under the radar” – places even the locals might not be aware of. So in July we decided to highlight some of the lesser-known communities surrounding Grand Rapids. This week the series takes us to Cannonsburg.

If you ask anyone around Grand Rapids whether they have heard of Cannonsburg, you’ll probably hear either “Isn’t that where the Picnic Pops are?” or “Oh yeah, I’ve been skiing there.” What many people don’t realize is that when it comes to finding a place to live, Cannonsburg has so much to offer! Natural beauty. A great commute to Grand Rapids and Ada. And a quirky little town that has all the essentials.

The village of Cannonsburg, in Cannon Township, is the kind of place where everyone knows your name. It’s barely more than an intersection, but it has all the basics: a post office, gas station/general store, a cozy restaurant, a smokehouse, a wine/liquor shop, an elementary school, and a few other local businesses. With its easy 20-minute commute to downtown Grand Rapids, or to Ada and Fulton Street via back roads, Cannonsburg is a great home base for commuters.

Public school students in Cannonsburg attend the excellent Rockford Public Schools, some of the best in the state academically, with strong sports programs to boot. Families may choose Cannonsburg because of the schools, and then fall in love with the area and other nearby activities like horseback riding, mountain biking, and golf courses.

Cannon Township is dotted with woods, streams, and lakes, so Cannonsburg appeals to sportspeople of all ages, or people who just like the outdoors. Pickerel Lake Park and Warren Townsend Park are ideal for fishing, hiking, or just relaxing and enjoying West Michigan’s seasons. If you like biking or walking, the Cannon Township Trail will take you from the township hall to Townsend Park. And hunters, hikers, and wildlife watchers can also enjoy the nearby Cannonsburg State Game Area.

Of course Cannonsburg is probably best known locally for those two things I mentioned: the Picnic Pops and skiing. Cannonsburg Ski & Ride Area has downhill skiing, tubing, mountain biking, and other adventures throughout the year. And the same ski area is also the site of the Grand Rapids Symphony’s annual Picnic Pops music series, one of the highlights of summer in Grand Rapids.

If you’re considering relocation Grand Rapids offers many different communities to fit your lifestyle, and Cannonsburg is a beautiful choice! If this sounds like your kind of place, search homes currently available in the Cannonsburg area. Michelle, when I hear Cannonsburg I certainly think of skiing just above Grand Rapids.  You have a very nice area there in west central Michigan.
