Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival - Sept 27 - 29, 2013
Are you looking for a fun weekend outing into the local mountains within a one hour drive of Rockville? Do you like rows and rows of unique crafts and artwork? County music? Lots of good food? Then head for scenic and convenient close-in West Virginia.
When: Sept 27-29, 2013
Then mark your calender for the weekend of September 27-29. It is coming up in only a couple of weeks. My wife and love to go to this fun festival, but we don't start thinking about it until the weekend arrives, or worse - after it has just past. So consider this blog as a memory jug if you want to go again and a plug for something that you might enjoy a great deal if you have never been before.
Where: About 5 miles past Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
Directions from Mountgomery County, Maryland (about 60 miles):
- Take I-270 West to Frederick, MD;
- At Frederick take exit for Route 340 West toward Charles Town/Harpers Ferry;
- Continue on Route 340 for approximately 20 miles and take Route 230 (toward Shepherdstown) for approximately 2 miles;
- Turn left onto Route 22 (Job Corps Road); entrance to festival is 1/2 mile on left.
The Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival takes place at Sam Michael's Park, 1330 Job Corps Road, Shenandoah Junction, WV 25442.
The Experience
The trip to the festival is usually a lot of fun, especially if the weather cooperates and it is not too hot or cold. The trip will take you by Frederick and Harpers Ferry, so you can enjoy other things to do while in route if you have the time or inclination.
Once you get there you will park your car in a grassy meadow and head up to the entrance. You will pay admission at the gate (see below for prices and a discount coupon).
You will probably hear a county band playing in the distance as you approach and see lots of other folks coming to enjoy the day with you. Everyone is friendly and having a good time. Lots of people bring lawn chairs with them and then plop down in front of the band stand. Others head for the tents. You will find row upon row of fantastic crafts and artwork. Many will be demonstrating their craft techniques and it is a great deal of fun to watch and ask questions. After a while you will probably get hungry or thirsty and you will have lots of beverage and food options to select from. If you are like us the day will race by and it will be time to go. You will probably have a purchase or two in a bag...
Note: there is NO bag tax in West Virginia.
You will head for the car and talk about had a great time that you had at the festival.
