  • For those of you you did not know and may be interested .Washington Township is still considering a name change to Robbinsville Township. I , for one, am ALL FOR the Name Change. Here is why, FIRST we have a problem identifying where a property is legally. The New Jersey Real Estate Commission insists we only advertise a home using the legal town name. Ok so I have to advertise everything in "ROBBINSVILLE" as Washington Twp. Since there are 4 other towns in New Jersey with some form of Washington in their names this makes things very confusing. If you search for homes on the internet in Washington Twp. you don't get Mercer County Homes.
  • SECOND When the name change goes thru we hopefully will have only 1 ZIPCODE for all of the NEW Robbinsville Township. This will also make our lives easier as packages and mail will move quicker with less mistakes.I know both the Municipal offices and Robbinsville High School have problems receiving packages due to the name/township confusion. I personally live in a Washington Township neighborhood "Windswept" that has a Hamilton Square zip code. Most of my mail comes to Hamilton,NJ,08690. We are the only neighborhood in Town that has a Hamilton Square zip code. So it is always an explaination I must add, over the years, whether it was a school function or Little league sign-ups and someone questioned where we live.
  • THIRD The Name Robbinsville will finally give us proper name recognition for the town we really live in.Look on a roadmap ,from Triple AAA, Robbinsville is easily found and identified,Washington Twp. is not. We will then be able to make sure all the road signs, exits and directions will point to the right place "ROBBINSVILLE,NJ"
  • The following article on the name change came from the MCAR Municipal Spotlight

Push for Name Change of Washington Township to Robbinsville Still Alive and Well

By the end of this month, Washington Township will have a new Robbinsville post office substation in Marrazo's Market on Washington Boulevard. Residents and township officials are hopeful that the new substation will ease mail delivery problems complicated by the township's shared zip code (08691) with Trenton. Washington Township's shared zip code with Trenton is not its only identity problem-there are five other municipalities in New Jersey that go by the same name. With Washington Townships in nearly every corner of the State, residents and elected officials in Mercer County's Washington Township have been making a strong push to officially change the municipality's name to Robbinsville. Since May 2005, township resident Lewis Koushel has been collecting signatures to put a question on the ballot to change the township's name to Robbinsville. To date, Mr. Kousel has collected over 1,000 signatures and only needs about 400 more before turning it into the township clerk for approval (for the petition to be valid 25 percent of the registered voters in Robbinsville must sign it). Mr. Koushel has until May 2007 to file the petition in time for the general election in November. The clerk must then approve it before a question can be placed on the ballot for the voters to decide on the name change. According to Mayor David Fried, the name change, if approved, would be phased in over three years and would not be a financial burden to the municipality. This is not the first time a push for the township's new identity has been exerted. In 2002, 62 percent of voters approved a nonbinding referendum to change the town's name, but when it came to collecting petition signatures to codify the change, the attempt fell far short. Also, in December 2002, the Township Committee sent a resolution to the state Department of Transportation requesting the Exit 7 sign on Interstate 195 be changed back to Robbinsville as it originally read (it was changed to say Washington in 1999). In the years that followed, residents petitioned, businesses complained and the then-Township Committee requested that the DOT change the sign back to Robbinsville to no avail. The use of the Robbinsville name, however, has become more prevalent with the newly-opened Robbinsville High School, the soon-to-be post office substation, and a growing number of businesses using the Robbinsville name in their titles to cut down on the confusion with the other municipalities. More residents, especially newer ones to the township, also seem to be in favor of the change as reflected in the wide-spread support for Mr. Koushel's petition. This time around, the name change might just go through.
