Americans today are living much longer lifespans than generations before. In 1915 life expectancy was a mere 54 years that is 24 years less than the 78 year average life span for people in 2006! Think of all experiences and accomplishments that can come out of an extra 24 years of life! With medical technology and advances those extra 24 years should be quality years keeping the aches and pains of aging under control.
With so many of us living well into our 70's it is comforting to know that there are options when it comes to "senior" housing. Many Americans at 55 are not ready for assisted living and will hope to never need nursing home care; they may however decide they would like a change of lifestyle where they can relate to their neighbors and create long lasting relationships in a community they call home. This group of people are causing the development of 55+ active communities to flourish. What can be expected at one of these communities? Most of these communities offer townhouse style living. Landscaping is most likely included in association dues but most associations allow the homeowner to do some outdoor gardening to make their unit unique to them. A community house will host a variety of events for different clubs, organizations, and interest groups. Units should be spacious enough that family and friends can comfortably come to visit but not with unneeded space to clean and heat/cool. These active adult communities differ from assisted living and nursing home because residents are not provided with medical assistance from an aid provided by the community.
