Love It or List It?

Many of us are know of the HGTV show Love It or List It?  Most of us love our homes for the memories that we have made, the design of the home, location or all of the above.  With our families growing or the kids going on to college, we begin to question ourselves if we should begin to make improvements to our home to make it work better for us or leave it the way it is and sell it.

My opinion is to take the time to know your neighborhood.  How is your home different?  Does your home have laminate counters in the kitchen while the comparable homes have granite?  Does your home have carpet where the other comparable homes have hardwood floors.  You get the picture.

The first rooms to compare are the kitchen and the bathrooms. If you have decided that you indeed need to replace your counters with granite or some other type of solid surface you need to realize that not always will you get dollar for dollar in value, but you are now more comparable with other homes.

If you are on a limited budget and still want to make improvements, there are many ways that you can improve your home just by doing little things at a time.  A fresh coat of paint, some new light fixtures and maybe changing out the hardware on kitchen cabinets would do the trick.

In time, you will be able to make the decision whether you should Love Your Home or List It and move to a new home.

Feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have about the market in your area.

Catrina, I like this advice. Homeowners who spend countless thousands of dollars on improvements to their home have to realize that they may not recoup all that expense.

Catrina, home improvements are always a mixed bag. Sometimes they are made with the sole purpose to make back money, a lot of it, not really because they are necessary or even a good fix for the house. Observing what others are doing in your neighborhood might give you a competitive edge. Good post!
