Hello, Friends and Neighbors -

I'm writing this on the 12th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on US soil.  It's a sobering thing to remember, but I want to be mindful of all those who lost loved ones, or suffered injury.  I'm still surprised how often I discover that someone I interact with knew someone who was there, on that day.

I hope you all will join me in taking a little extra time to be gentle with those we encounter, realizing we do't have any idea what they might be going through.

Denver in Top 5 of Most-Improved Markets

In a report released by Realtor.com, Denver is found to be #3 out of the cities with the greatest year-over-year inventory reductions (down 25.10%).  Detroit and Boston are #1 and #2.

The news is even better when it comes to the number of days listings stay on the market - Denver is #2 at 31 days (behind Oakland CA at only 20 days)!

Talking About Color

As the temperatures cool, thoughts turn towards those indoor home improvement projects, the most popular of which is painting.  A new paint color can bring new life into a room, but how do you choose?

You can get a lot of help at the paint counter or from an interior designer, but it helps to speak the language.  So here's some tips you may not have known:

The difference between a hue, tint, shade and tone:

HUE: Any color at its clearest.  These are the 'primary' colors you normally think of as comprising the 'color wheel'. Hues are 'energetic, attention-grabbing, and bold'.

TINT:  If you add white you soften the hue, cool it down and turn it toward a pastel.  Tints are thought of as soft, youthful and soothing.

SHADE:  If you add black to a hue, you deepen and darken the color. Shades tend to be rich, mysterious, and sophisticated.

TONE:  If you add grey to a hue, the tone tends to be neutral - relaxing and comforting.

Which do you like best? For me, I prefer shades, but can't live with a lot of that on my walls and tend to go with tones. But outside, I definitely prefer hues and tints (I put a lot of orange and aqua into my backyard this year).

Cool Autumn Days Are the Best Time to Garden!

I love gardening in the fall - I've usually taken an unintended break through the hottest weeks and am ready to get back at it, yet the hustle of the holidays hasn't started to infringe on my schedule yet.

You can find many articles with tips about fall gardening tasks, but my favorite tip is for those who want to set up new beds for next year's gardens.  Whether you're thinking flower or vegetable beds, raised beds are extremely popular, and for good reason.

Start creating your new garden beds now.  Decide where you want them (consider how much sun they will get, wind protection, and the size of the  bed for easy maintenance).  I like a bed size of 3 feet by 8 feet. I wouldn't actually set up the walls unless you're using something very sturdy, like stone.  I used plastic bed frames and setting them up without filling them with soil right away caused them to warp.

If your bed is going where there is currently grass there's no need to dig up the grass - just cover it with a thick layer of cardboard or newspaper. Then, put grass clippings, plant cuttings, and compostable kitchen scraps on top.  Thin layers of these materials won't cause an odor, but once you get a couple of inches built up, shovel on a couple of inches of soil.

Continue this process throughout the winter.  If your bed isn't full come spring, top it off with good garden soil purchased from your favorite nursery. You will have created an easy-care flower or vegetable bed, ready for spring planting.

If you put the bed on a grassy area you won't even have to weed around it, just mow.  Otherwise, use any mulch such as stones or bark around or between the beds to keep down weeds.
