Two Trees You May Not Want to Plant in Your Yard in Brentwood TNBradford Pear Tree

Bradford Pear and River Birch trees are both growing in my yard and more to the point, my husband and I put them there! If I had known then what I know now...

Bradford Pear trees grow quickly and so more often than not you'll see them included in landscaping in neighborhoods in middle Tennessee. The also have beautiful blooms in the spring. The biggest problem with Bradford Pear trees is that they become top-heavy if not trimmed regularly. When storms pass through with high winds, branches tend to fall down, as much as 1/2 of the tree, as you can see in the picture. Hopefully, when the branch falls it won't fall on your home or vehicle, but you will have the cost of hiring someone to cut it up and haul it away or take the time to do it yourself.

River Birch Tree

River Birch is also a fast growing tree and has an attractive bark. The problem with ours is that it loses leaves and small branches year round.

Leaves

As you can see from the picture taken in August, we have leaves to rake and sticks to pick up throughout the year. Our landscaper suggested that we plant it at the side of the house. I think its shallow roots don't stay moist enough and thus the leaves dry out and fall off. A better place to plant it may have been down by the creek. If you already have this tree growing in your yard or really want to plant one you should visit the US Dept of Agriculture website to get more information.

For information on selecting trees for your yard, go to the Better Homes and Gardens website.
