A Killdeer Walked Across my Driveway

I am moving to a slightly rural area so I am experiencing a lot of birds and animals running amok. Today while driving down the street, I noticed this cute little killdeer be-bopping down the sidewalk.

At first I thought it was a roadrunner but the cute stripped forehead helped me determine the specie.

Hi Endre,

They remind me of Sandpipers and have pretty long legs too. Cornell Lab says they hang out at lakes and rivers but also in the grasslands. I think they find the water at the golf course.

Hi Kristin -- I saw your post title and like Endre hadn't previously heard of the killdeer.  Thanks for the explanation and thankfully you were able to get a very clear photo.   Congrats on your move.

Hi Michael,

It is a very interesting bird and jumps up and down when it walks instead of just walking like most birds. Reminds me of a roadrunner.

Patty,

I am thinking it might have a nest somewhere close by. I just took a few pics and then drove away quietly so as not to disturb it's job at hand; perhaps forging for food. I love the stripes on it's little head.

Hi Bette,

I had not either but I went to identify the bird, and there it was. Interesting name as I am sure they do not kill deer. Don't know why they got that name?

Hi Jim,

I think it is maily a shore bird but goes inland too. Cute little guy bee-booping down the sidewalk. I am going to look for a nest soon.

Hi Lisa,

Interesting that none of us have heard of it before but they seem to be a common specie. Perhaps we all get them mixed up with sandpipers. Have a great weekend.

Hi Lisa,

Here is an updated picture I took yesterday in the same area. Looked up to see why they call them "killdeer" as the name is unusal. It is due to their shrill which sounds like "kill-deer". Cornell Lab says they are extremely noisy birds.

Kristin, thank you for posting the new photo.  The reason I emailed you was because I had never heard of the kildeer before your post.  I was playing a computer game last night - a game that I was trying to beat my top score on for weeks to break into the highest level of the game.  It was the very last question and was worth 1,250 points.  There was no picture, but I had to identify a bird that had eight letters and I knew where they two e's were.  The only other information I had was that there was a 'k'somewhere in the name.  I wracked my memory.  I tried to figure out what the ending could be with two e's immediately preceeding the last letter.  The only letters that seemed to make sense in that position after the two e's would be an 'n', 'r', or 't'. It had only been one week since reading your post and I didn't think that I had even remembered the name in my subconscious, then all of a sudden I thought "KILLDEER!" and that was it. I got my 1,250 points and passed into the highest level of the game I have been trying to get into for weeks.  It was all because of your post.  I hope you find this antecdote amusing :)

Hi Lisa,

What a coincidence that the word killdeer would be the answer. It is really a cute little bird. Cornell Lab says they jount down the street but I say they bee-bop like roadrunners and they do not fly very high or for long periods of time. Cute little birds with stripes on their head.

Glad you got your 1250 points. So glad my blog helped. We all share info with each other and never know what tidbit will help us.
