After years of leaking roofs, the damage can show up in the flooring.
A long time apartment resident finally moved out after nearly 20 years. The building had a leaking roof for a few years and the water had worked its way down the fireplace chase. The water did not appear in the walls, so no one had any idea that there was a problem until now.
There were a few areas where the damage was so extensive the flooring had become very weak and brittle. Now that we know that there is a problem it will take a bit of time to correct the damage that the water has done.

In this particular apartment the subflooring is cover with lightweight concrete, the water can travel under the concrete. Water sitting not able to dry out can be a recipe for mold and deterioration. After a few years, the subflooring can fail – that is what happened here.
