A  Buyer's Guide To Radon

Knowledge is Power- Sir Francis Bacon

Mmmm Bacon.... Sorry. sometimes I get distracted! Although Radon is no laughing matter...my intent is to expose the mystique and fear surrounding this topic and give you a working knowledge of Radon: what is it? Where does it come from? And how to mitigate or eliminate your exposure to high or dangerous levels. Radon is a naturally occuring radioactive gas. It is caused by naturally decomposing of Uranium and Thorium. But more commonly, decomposing shales, granite and other rock formations contribute to our A Guide to Rsdonexposure to Radon. Since Radon is released into the soil and naturally seeks to escape by the easiest routes necessary, basements and wells are great venues for Radon.

Exposure to Radon has been linked to Lung Cancer. It is believed to be the second leading cause after smoking. Although Radon is a non reactive Noble Gas. It's Radioactivity, especially in high concentrations is what is harmful. Exposure from radon in well water is believed to cause harm not by ingesting (which I feel isn't great either) but when aerated and released into indoor living space by showers, faucets, toilets, and washing machines. Ultimately contributing to higher air Radon levels. So We agree, Radon needs to go. But how. Well the only way to know where your Radon levels are is to test. I always recommend a reputable professional do testing, analysis of your home. They can be invaluable in determining and mitigating the sources of Radon exposure. Whether your Radon is coming in from your water supply or radon contamination through the ground will determine the mitigation methods used to lower you radon exposure to safe actionable lRadonevels.(Since Radon occurs naturally in our environment, no mitigation can yield a zero level) The current actionable level in Maine is .4 PiCu/L (PicoCuries per Litre of air) I have included more data in the links below to expand on this topic.
