Twelfth anniversary of scared

By
Industry Observer

Reflecting on the tragedy of 9/11/2001, it occurs to me that the terrorists accomplished their goals all too well.  They murdered thousands of people, and that itself is certainly an incident of terror.  But, their terror seems perpetuated in most of our daily lives and the continued actions of our government.

Our response to the 9/11 tragedy was to start two wars, neither of which has particularly made our lives better.  The economic drain on this country as a result of those wars is felt now and will be felt for generations.  There are secret police watching everything we say or do, listening to our phone conversations, and checking our call lists.  Our population has collectively lost millions of tiny Swiss army knives mistakenly left in a pocket, either worn or in carry on luggage when trying to board an airplane.  When at the airport, everyone's a real estate agent, or appears to be one, standing around with our shoes off.  Pilots are sometimes armed, and everyone is suspicious of people who appear a little (or a lot) different.  Now, purses are not allowed in the stadium during professional football games -- Who thought that one up?  We have been a little scared and a lot cautious since 2001.

Whether by actual necessity or by paranoia, the terrorists have managed to sculpt a new normal for Americans.  I would say that there must be a peaceful solution to the conflicting philosophies of Mideast and West, but that will not happen. We can't even get the people we elect to cooperate with each other, and they would be the foundation to any Mideast accord.  The terrorists have succeeded in changing our lives forever.

As long and evil exists people will always have to take measures of protection.  But I don't walk around scared or paranoid personally.  I said back in the 70s after the Cuba hijacking that cockpits should not have access from inside the plane.... but that didn't happen.  And until the bombings in Fort Hood shooting there had not been another act of terrorism on U.S. soil, so I personally don't think Iraq and Afghanistan were for nothing.  Another great thing about our country though, is we are all still free to speak our minds.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Tammy, my main thesis is that terror is not limited to body count.  It is widespread fear that has been present in America and much of the world since 9/11. In their goal of fueling that long-lasting environment, the terrorists were successful.  I suggest that there has been one continuous act of terrorism on our soil since its beginning in 2001.

We could debate the value of the war against the Taliban (who we armed a few years earlier) and the war against those mythical WMD's ad nauseum.  However, the economic effects of those unfunded wars are hard to deny.

Mike, you are right about the body count.  They seem to be satisfied with a suicide bomb only killing 10 people on a bus or something like that. And as far as politics, we elected officials that vote however they want on issued that their district voted against. How does that work?

Larry, our electoral system mandates that survival in office is almost exclusively dependent on the candidate's ability to successfully raise funds.  If elected to the House, a candidate has twenty-two months to re-stock his/her financial war chest and win another election.  They have no time to do much else, and their votes are heavily influenced by the financial backing they receive.  Financial backing and the wishes of voters in their district are not always in harmony.
