Yesterday my wife and I were returning to our beautiful Hutchinson Island. As we crossed the causeway over the Indian River, we noticed a young lady with a sign promoting a lunch special at Subway. If you are from this neck of the woods, seeing hawkers with signs on the sidewalk is not an uncommon sight. However, this girl was over the top. Instead of just standing there with her sign and looking pretty, she was tossing the sign in the air, catching it behind her back, twirling it, doing just about anything to get our attention. Needless to say, my wife looked at me and said, “Anyone who works that hard deserves our business.” We split a foot-long for lunch! (I am the last of the big spenders.)
Watching the girl reminded me of a story of two buzzards sitting forlornly on a dead branch of a desert mesquite. One of the buzzards turned to the other and said, “I don’t know about you, but I am tired of waiting for something to die. I am going out and kill something!”
As I pondered this seemingly insignificant event in my life, it started me thinking about which part of my real estate business is really just business as usual? Or better yet, what, if anything, am I doing that will distinguish me from all of my competitors? How was I twirling my sign, catching it behind my back, and drawing attention to my real estate business? As I write this, I honestly do not have the answers. But, thanks to my “Subway Gal”, over the coming weeks and months I will be studying and looking for every opportunity to renew my mind. To think beyond the ordinary. If anyone has any suggestions, please bring them on.
If this is the first time that you have read my blog, my wife Pam and I recently relocated to Hutchinson Island Florida from Maine. By the way, we have a restored Maine farmhouse for sale near the coast. (sidebar) Anyway, we both come from entrepreneurial backgrounds in consumer products, advertising, and marketing. After taking six months off the entrepreneurial juices started flowing again and we decided that real estate might be the best avenue for us to use our life experiences in business. We thoroughly enjoy our adventure here on Hutchinson Island and in real estate. I have tried to make my website as informative as possible. However, if you have any questions, Pam and I look for almost any excuse to go exploring.
