Warwick is a town of approximately 32,000 residents, located along the southwest border of Orange County NY. This unique community in the Hudson Valley is known for its rural charm, as well as its cultural amenities and commerce. Located a stones throw from New York City, and along the border of New Jersey, Warwick provides ample options for commuters.

Location and Geography

The town of Warwick is located on the southernmost tip of Orange County, north of the townships of Vernon and West Milford in New Jersey. It sits south of Goshen and Chester, and is bordered by Tuxedo to the east. Warwick is the second largest township in New York, with a total area of nearly 1o5 square miles. The town is home to Greenwood Lake, Orange County’s largest lake, and Glenmere Lake, one of the region’s most important habitats for endangered species.

Like many towns in the Hudson Valley, Warwick is composed of several smaller communities. Most notable are its three villages: Florida, Greenwood Lake, and the Village of Warwick. It also is home to 16 small hamlets, the most well known being Pine Island, the commercial center of the Black Dirt Region.

Warwick is accessible via two regional state highways, New York State Route 17A (NY 17A) and NY 94. Commuters can access New York City via bus using the NJ Transit system, or take Metro-North for a hassle-free train ride into the city. The Warwick Transit system provides access to multiple points of interest throughout Orange County.

Lifestyle

Warwick embodies the charm of small-town life in upstate New York. Although the town may be rural, it is also a vibrant and active place to live. Its quaint, walkable village centers each provide unique spaces for residents to come together for work, entertainment, and social events. Regular events such as Art on the Green or the Village Concert Series allow culturally-minded residents to interact with local artists.  Another local favorite is the Warwick Drive-In, where residents can enjoy the nostalgia of the drive-in theater with first-run movies, home-cooked concessions, and (coming soon!) digital projection.

Warwick is also a delight for the outdoor enthusiast. As one of the newest designated Appalachian Trail communities, there are ample opportunities for hiking and observing wildlife along the town’s 10 mile stretch of the “A.T.” For those more inclined to enjoy the water, Greenwood Lake provides a lovely spot to swim, fish, boat, and even enjoy a game of beach volleyball.

Any discussion of life in Warwick would be incomplete without mentioning the many festivals that take place there every year. The most popular is Applefest, which has been held the first Sunday of October since 1989. Featuring music, entertainment, dozens of local vendors, a carnival, and (of course) an apple pie baking contest, the free event has gained national recognition as one of the 100 best festivals in the US. Other notable festivals include the Hudson Valley Jazz Festival (formerly, the Warwick Valley Jazz Festival), which draws musicians and jazz fans from all over the Hudson Valley and New York City. The Florida Family Fun Fest in August features free rides, music, vendors, the Little Miss Florida pageant, and 5K and 10K races.

History

Warwick has been a community since at least the early 18th century, although the town was not officially created until 1788. Like many towns in the Hudson Valley, Warwick played an important role in the Revolutionary War as the site of a Continental Army encampment, and the town is known to have hosted George Washington in his travels. History buffs will appreciate the Village of Warwick’s impressive historic district, which features houses and other buildings dating as early as 1764.

In the 19th century, Warwick was popularized by naturist author Henry William Herbert (aka Frank Forrester), who wrote The Warwick Woodlands. The town’s location along the Lehigh & Hudson Railroad contributed to a population boom after the Civil War. As the town moved into the early 20th century, its easy rail access and natural beauty led it to become something of a resort destination for wealthy New York families. It is this beauty and favorable location that continue to make Warwick a destination for commuters as well as for summer homes.

Education

Warwick is served by the Warwick Valley Central School District, which includes three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Over 4,000 students attend WVCSD schools, and the district employs approximates 340 teachers, 320 support staff, and 20 administrators. Students take advantage of a variety of activities in the arts, athletics, and other areas of interest. High school students have access to advanced placement courses, as well as college classes from local community colleges and 4-year institutions.

Continuing students in Warwick are served by the SUNY Orange community college, with campuses in nearby Newburgh as well as Middletown NY. There are also many choices in the Hudson Valley area for students seeking a public or private university education.
