Ask An Ambassador: Thoughts About Blogitude

Happy or sadAsk An Ambassador:  Thoughts About Blogitude

The last 24 hours was one of my more "sucky" days in real estate.  I got totally blindsided yesterday morning by a friend/seller asking for a listing release to hire a local, big name agent.  Ooomph.  And the "it's not you, it's me" bit didn't help an iota.  Then an afternoon inspection, and I'm thinking it may make perfect sense for my buyers to opt out and have us look for another good fit.  Then past buyers of ours chose the previous listing agents for the home to sell it now (that hurt, and for some reasons I can't even begin to cover in public).  Scheduled for a closing today for more of our sellers, but STILL waiting on the buyer's loan approval, and that's after a 3 week postponement.  Will it happen today?  Honestly I still don't know.

Now any one of those "events" could have provided me a host of blog topics for weeks, but you know how many I'll write about those events?  Zero.  That little paragraph at the start will be the last of it.  Now I'm not saying there isn't the place for the occasional rant, but they're not my choice for prime blogging for building our business.  Sure, I can get plenty of agents to commiserate with us, but does that bring the listing back?  Nope.  Does it remove the radon and mold from my buyer's home-to-be and now probably not home?  Nope there too.  Didn't get the listing?  As some of my friends have said, get over it cupcake!  Real estate is NOT the avocation for those with thin skin.  I guarantee that you'll get the occasional virtual kick right in the crotch.  It smarts, and then you get up and get back in the game before your competition passes you!

And that's where my choice for blog topics originates on a daily basis.  How do we improve the odds of TODAY being another good day in real estate?  What is the consumer looking for and can we provide it?  What engages our fellow Rainers?  Can we get both the consumers and Rainers to remember where we live and work, and make us their FIRST call when they need help?  So the answers to those questions leads to Tuesday Ask An Ambassador posts, early month market reports, local events and subdivision coverage, and a healthy coverage of our niche, because THAT is what makes the phone ring for us!  Because frankly, I don't want our posts to be an area of bringing folks down, but building up.  It's our choice and it's an easy one.

Keep on Blogging!

Bobbie, Thanks!  Yesterday was a turn the other cheek kind of day :)

Mike, Don't think that low road didn't make a pass through my mind! :)

Tammie, I've got some private places besides AR to take any rants, so I'll keep them there with a smaller population of other agents who've also been there and done that.  No doubt, sometimes we just have to get it out of our systems, and those non-agents are all potential clients just like you said, so they're off limits!

Lynn,  Thanks!  We take the Ambassador role seriously and hope to make the Rain and our blog a positive place to visit.

Bill, Liz, life is not the same everyday - and for us, it's even more difficult. Murphy's law is always true for us - if one thing fails, all other things will! Been there, done that, and like you, I have stopped ranting about it - because, that does not take us anywhere!

(And yes, I have written very few such blogs out of frustration and to gain sympathy of other members in past - I should admit it.)

No the only really good blog I see coming out of that whole cluster is perhaps why it's a really good thing to have a home inspection and find another home when the inspection reveals major issues

Time spent fretting over a lost listing is time NOT spent generating a new listing from a seller who is a ready, willing, and able partner. Hard, but necessary, to let go.

Real estate is NOT the avocation for those with thin skin.  I think you hit the nail on the head.  I just had to lick some wounds when an inspection went south..

Liz & Bill I agree we all experience the proverbial "kick in the ..." it happens sadly to all of us and it always hurts...especially when we know we did everything within reason and still being ethical about our business....I never write about those incidents either, there is enough positive things to write about. Sorry about your "bad experience" BTW price does not matter it just makes it hurt more!

Praful, I think we've all written them at some point or another, and in moderation I think that's okay.  I'm just at the point as a blogger I think when I look at how I should use my time, there's not much reason to write one now.....assuming I can get my head right to write anything at all when we're having one of "those" days!

Tammy, The best $500 they could have possibly spent too, because it helped them avoid potentially 10's of 1000's of dollars AFTER closing if they'd have went forward without one.

Margaret, We don't get them all, and sometimes all we can do is laugh.  And sometimes we were just there to get our brains picked.

Joan, And as long as the buyers stay the course in the long run, you and I will find another home for them.

Laura, Some topics I may be personally ambivalent about, but it's what the consumer wants so they get written.

Endre, And that's where I have to be mentally.  We did what we were supposed to do (and more), so all we can do is focus on the next sellers/buyer who DOES want to work with us.

Christine, Our 'tude definitely filters and defines how things happen, or at least how they seem to happen.

Nobody promised an easy road in the real estate business. Some of the challenges can really knock the wind out of us. Getting up to continue the fight is what we have to do to be winners.

Bliz, I agree! Ranting on a blog is more for the agent to get it off of their chest. I often wonder what the consumer may thing about the agent's character. Keep it positive and everyone wins. Blogitude, I like that!!

Roy, Yes they did!  But they fibbed :)

Michael, Agreed!  I really for the most part don't want our clients knowing just how much we have to put up with behind the scenes.

Ed, It certainly does!

BLiz- I have to apologize for not commenting on this sooner.  I saw the title and knew that I wanted to read it when I had some quality time to read and respond.  First of all, thank you.  Thank you for not writing another post about how bad your day was and just leaving it at that, without some kind of positive message attached.  We all need to let it all out and what better place to do it but with friends.  But, again, thank you again for not trying to turn a perfectly good posting opportunity into a post about "nothing."

Kathy, No apologies needed, ever!  In general, we always have the goal to inform or entertain (or both!).  But no desire to ever bring any of our readers down.  There's already ample opportunity for that as we read/watch the news, see our FB feed, read blogs, etc.  So why not strive to be the bright spot, even on a bad day :)

BLiz every experience in this business should be a learning experience. Then we take that experience and either improve upon it or learn how to avoid it in the future.  And then we do what comes naturally:  We blog about it.
