"Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore" Goodbye Colorado rain

As you probably know some parts of Colorado are severely affected by flash flooding last week. Many areas are still inundated with water. Homes, businesses, roads and infrastructure have been completely destroyed. The unbelievable devastation is heartbreaking.

I’ve been praying for sunshine, blue skies, no rain and better days ahead for all – and it looks like we’re finally on our way. Yesterday, after 8 days of rain, the sun came out and blue skies have returned!

Fortunately, Livermore and Red Feather escaped major disaster because we are high enough, and because we have no large rivers or canyons.  But after 8 days of rain – and SO MUCH OF IT, it has created problems for some in our mountain communities, too, like flooded basements, leaky roofs and intermittent power outages. The ground is fairly saturated.   Minor inconveniences compared to what so many others have had to face.

I ran into a client in the store on Saturday, who lives in Loveland during the week and has a weekend cabin in Red Feather.  “Who would have thought we’d have to come to Red Feather so that we would have running water and electricity!” he said.   Well, in case of flood- first rule is “move to higher ground”, my friend!

But, not all are so fortunate. Thousands have been displaced.   They all remain in my thoughts and prayers, today and my heart goes out to those who have lost so much.

Today, I noticed all the rain has brought out tons of mushrooms- something I have NEVER seen before in Red Feather, in September.

I can't seem to change "Colorado Wildfires" below to "Colorado Floods"- but go ahead, click on that Red Cross button anyway.  The Colorado Red Cross supports Colorado Rescue Operations and helps evacuees with shelter, food and basic necessities.

Hi Leah, Thank you. I'm grateful to be safe and just feel terrible when I see the images on T.V.  Since we have been in a drought, the rains were most welcome at first....  and at least we did not have winds like in a Hurricane.

Tammy, it is really heartbreaking- it will take a long time for some of those areas to recover. Normally, we have sunshine over 300 days a year, so when it's cloudy and rainy for a whole week, it really affects people here.  I'm glad our blue skies are back, too- it makes a difference! Thanks Tammy.

Mary~ We've been fortunate too. On Saturday, we were out showing homes in Aurora and we ended up in the middle of flash flood. It was a bit scary, but nothing compared to what the folks North of us have been experiencing.

Hi Mary, I think it would be good advise not to eat or harvest those mushrooms. Who knows where they came from. This natural disaster has certainly taken it's toll and hope that people can put back together their lives after all the devastation.

Mother Nature seems to be taking us to extremes. We have gotten some much needed rain on the Western Slope, but not nearly the amounts you all have gotten on the other side of the state. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone back there.

Mary, you have had such a swing of so little rain to so much rain in your state in the last year.  Our prayers have gone out your way for all the hardship and loss of life with the wildfires and now the torrential downpours and flooding.

How many total inches of rain did you receive in your area, Mary?

Oh gosh Donna, I'm glad you were not hurt in that flash flood- that is really scary.  I'm wondering, you were out showing property...what in the world did the buyers think of that? thanks for stopping in, I appreciate that Donna!

Hi Dorie, I'm sure any of us would have gladly shared the rain with you, given a chance! Thanks for your thoughts on it, Dorie I do hope you get some rain soon.

Thank you Donald, we aren't that familiar with water, and hopefully won't be again for a very long time! :-)

Hi William, one of my friends hunts mushrooms and know which ones to eat- but I think you are right, I'm leaving them alone.   I hope that everyone will be able to put their lives back together,too-  it may take awhile,  but progress is already underway. Thank you for coming by tonight William.

Thank you Debbie, yes- we so needed the rain...just not all at once!  You're right, we seem to go from one extreme to the other- hope everything is going well with you on the Western Slope. I appreciate you stopping in, my Colorado friend.

Hi Bruce, thank you for the prayers coming our way. It has been a hard ride for many with the wildfires, and then flooding this past year.  My husband has an aluminum fishing boat, which he still had on the trailer, that became our rain gauge. Although the official numbers are less, there were 16-18 inches of water in that boat Bruce!

Wow- Mary!  That is a LOT of rain, and your neighbors are fortunate to live in the Larimore and Red Feather Lakes areas where the ground is high!

Thank you so much Michele, prayers are needed for those still the path of flooding waters.

Bruce, we ARE fortunate to be where we are; Those inches of rain translate into feet in the lower lying areas. There is one town out east, where the news last night reported 19 FEET of water and it's still not over .... still moving east

Mary, thank you for posting this about your area.  We're all so concerned about our Colorado friends, but I don't know enough about the areas geographically to know who's in peril and who's on high ground.  I love that you added the Red Cross to your blog for easy donating.  Imagine if all 300,000 plus ActiveRain members just donated $1.  We could make a huge difference for just a small amount.  Great job.

Mary, it has been disheartening watching all the flooding and displaced families.    Hopefully the individuals missing will be found alive.     It has been a tough week, and hope you are safe and dry.  Bring on the bright blue skies and sunshine we are used to here in Colorado.

Mary so glad that the rain stopped, and you received sunshine instead. The cold weather is coming and from what I have heard the damage caused by the flood will be enormous.

We were out with a Mom (a co-worker from a previous job) and her 10-year old son. We pulled over and took shelter at a gas station under the canopy. Brendan (the son) was totally freaked out and wanted to go home. He kept hearing the flash flood warnings on our smart phones. We had to explain that we couldn't leave that it would be worse to leave.

Hi Juli, so sorry to be getting back to this post so late. It would be amazing if everyone gave just $1.00 you're right! It is going to be awhile before everything is going to be all right for many.

Hi Joan, I think they did an amazing job warning people and rescuing most-it's just been such an awful ordeal for some Coloradoans.  I agree with you about that sunshine, though. We are just not used to gloomy gray days!

Hi Jennifer, the damage is great, in some places. It is so sad but heartwarming to see people pulling together, too.

Hi Donna, thanks for coming back- poor little kid, he must have been scared! At least you knew your co-worker ---had to be a showing day to remember though. I'm glad you were safe.

Hi Myrl!  Oh I thought of you when I heard about the fire in Yosemite, as you had taken some spectacular photos there, I believe. Mother Nature has gone a little wacky lately. It semms extreme weather is becoming more the norm in many places. People are resilient and having blue skies does lift the spirits. Thanks Myrl.

Mary, that sure was a freak storm, and one I hope we don't experience for a long time.  Glad you were spared the serious flooding
