A Tale Of Two Doctors - How Realtors Are Like Doctors

I recently blogged about changing primary care physicians. Mind you, I've not had a primary care physician in the past 15+ years.

My new doctor reviewed my lab results, and stated all was perfect, and I didn't need to come back for another 6 months. Fabulous news!

So, how come the last doctor wanted to continue to see me every 8 weeks, I wondered?

Chalk it up to different practices. The prior doctor may have been more conservative, more hands on.  The truth is, he & I had the same conversation every 8 weeks, and then the scrip pad would come out for the same drugs, and I set up an appointment for another 8 weeks.

I grew tired of this, as I felt I was on a hamster wheel, with no forward progress.

Enter the new doc, who writes my scrips for 3 months at a time, and has told me I don't need to come back for six months.  Both of which save me time and money.

How does this compare to Realtors?

Simple: one agent may have a different perspective based on their market experience. Their marketing plan and activities may be different. The way sellers and buyers interact with them may be different.

You only know when you talk to more than one, or get a second opinion.

If you feel your professional is not the right choice for you, follow your instincts and check with someone else. After all, if you can save both time and money, why wouldn't you want to?

The prior doctor also had the opportunity to refill and overprescribe scrips more frequently. A dangerous practice which might have harmed you, Carol. Unscrupulous physicians have been known to do things like that for kickbacks from pharmaceutical reps. They're the ones who know that they can't make a living off of a patient who's a portrait of well-being. In their larcenous mindset it pays to have a waiting room full of sick people.

Hi Carol - Interesting analogy. I've noticed that service providers in a lot of different industries seem to be following practices that focus on maximizing their revenue at the expense of focusing on their customer's real needs. Mary had a doctor she had been seeing for a dozen years who recently got fired by his health care company because he was spending too much time with patients and taking too many patients who didn't have insurance. It's pretty obvious whose interest is served when these things happen.

Different ways of approaching their businesses is what it boils down to and you found the one you work best with.

Dick - it's an oxymoron what you describe....I wouldn't want someone evaluating how much time I spend with buyers or sellers. Everyone's needs are different.

....Experience Isn't Expensive.... It's Priceless!

Hello Carol,

Great analogy, finding the right professional (in any industry) is key - one size does not fit all!

Every doctor is different and it's so important to find one you are comfortable with and trust.  My primary was out of the country and I had to see another dr. in the practice....I will NEVER see him again.  He really made a terrible impression.

Now that is a comparison I would not have thought of. I have to trust my doc or go find another.
