Kitchens with dark hardwood floors

I've been seeing 2 inter-related trends lately in Westchester County - 1) Kitchens with hardwood flooring and 2) dark hardwood flooring. So, naturally, we are seeing lots of kitchens with dark hardwood flooring. Often, dark hardwood floors are paired with light cabinets, especially white and cream, for a nice contrast. I thought it would be helpful to capture a few pictures of these since I have so many customers asking me about them.

I will be adding more photos of kitchens with dark hardwood flooring soon. Stay tuned.   Also, it seems that white cabinets are the most popular right now. This makes sense as they are bright and look clean. And, they also contrast well with hardwood flooring, regardless of whether you do a dark or light stain.

Below are some of my most popular kitchen flooring articles:

Debbie, this combination of dark hardwood flooring and white cabinets gives it a nice vintage look.  I've always liked white cabinets though because they always look crisp and are timeless.

I think the dark hard wood floor matches the hard wood counter tops very well!

Debbie -- I just sold two new construction condos and I asked the designers what the most popular choices were for the kitchens. ....   White cabinets with the darker hardwood flooring. As long as you balance the dark flooring off with the lighter cabinets, it can look quite stunning as your pictures illustrate.

A great pairing if you ask me . . . dark wood floor and white cabinets, etc.  I was drooling a little at Home Depot today thinking about how I'm going to give my little rental a freshen up . . . in a couple of years.  In 2015 I will have owned it for 20 years.  MY how time flies.  I'm I'm thinking of some fun things to do in a couple of years!!

Debbie - The white and the dark do contrast so well that it's not a surprise that this is so popular.

I love the hardwood floors in my kitchen as well as the entire main floor of my home (except the bathrooms, which are travertine).  Dark floors do show a lot more dust than mine however, and my oak hardwood planks do a great job of hiding my dog's blond hair :-)

Debbie, well, I just love hardwood floor in kitchen (not sure why!) that continues to living room or family room without a wall separator - and it looks gorgeous!

When I remodeled my kitchen in 2008, I went for a timeless look, especially since I have an older home built in the 40s. I chose antique cream with a distressed finish for the cabinets and a dark (it's called Lava) Marmoleum. The cabinets are not too white to show dirt and the floor is dark enough to hide it, LOL.

Beautiful and very popular here.  In fact, aren't dark floors becoming more popular in general?  Many buyers want to hire floor refinishers before they move in to darken the floors.

This is interesting and timely information.  For one reason or another, I've always been attached to Dark Walnut finishes.  I have several furniture pieces with that stain.  I've also kept my white walls, while others went to color.  I've chosen instead to put the color in upholstry (usually flowered), or brightly colored.  The look presented in your picture, is very attractive.

The dark wood floors provide a gorgeous contrast for sure. I have that in my kitchen. But I still would prefer a non-wood stone surface in a kitchen. Just easier on maintenance!

All - Thank you so much for your comments.  I really appreciate it.  It's been a busy weekend, so I apologize for not responding individually.  The first picture is one I took, the 2nd is by Kristine Ginsberg and the 3rd is a stock photo from my company.  And, yes, dark floors are becoming more popular.

Debbie, I do like the contrast.  But is wood flooring really practical in a kitchen?  Just wondering??

HI Debbie - I love that look of the dark floors with the lighter cabinets. It adds contrast, interest and depth. Nothing is more boring than an all dark or all white kitchen.

My last kitchen was cherry cabinets. This house we went with white, and we get a lot of compliments. I see white cabinets more and more, and it looks clean, which is always nice in a kitchen.

My floors are not dark, but dark makes for high contrast which many people like. My entire home is hardwood except the bathrooms and kitchen, so we just didnt need anther room of hardwood. If i was building new ior remodelling under different circumstances, i think the dark floors are beautiful.
