Robbing the post office?  That's just practicing...

True story:  I got a money order in the mail, and made a trip to my local post office to cash it.  It's pictured above- Altamonte Springs, FL just outside of Orlando.

The clerk behind the counter took a quick look at the money order, and said "We don't have that much money".

I thought to myself "Yeah, I remember seeing that story just yesterday about how broke the postal service is".

But not enough money to cover my money order?  I thought that was a bit crazy.  The clerk was polite and told me they'd have more money in the afternoon and to check back then, but I went to work instead- and checked on the cash availability at another local post office by phone.

I must admit, it felt a bit strange calling post offices and asking them how much cash they had on hand- after all, it would seem to a bit of a risky thing for the ol' USPS to clue any thug that happened to do the same in on the fact that they could be holding thousands of dollars or something.

I thought "What if I had been a thug, and was looking to rob a post office?"

Then I thought twice...

Robbing the post office?  That's just practicing...

Hi, Mark:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Exactly.  I did, however, find one of their places that said they'd have my money if I waited until the very end of the day!

Hi, Sussie:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  The money order was for $700.  It's not a milliion, but I understand it's probably more than they have in each drawer and all.  But I just thought "Heck, my dad gave the post office $700 on his end..."

Forgot to mention it above, but the workaround proposed by one of the post offices I called yesterday was almost as crazy (perhaps crazier) than my initial problem:  one post office said they had $450.  They said I could get that from them- and for $1.20, they'd give me a money order for the other $250!

Hi, Mike:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Nothing too confusing- my dad sent me a money order for my birthday next week, and I've got a P.O. box at the Altamonte Springs post office.

I'd probably have to agree with you on the looks of the place, too- doubt much has changed there exterior-wise..

More opinions than you want to hear about.

They should change the name to "money request" which would imply that they have an option on whether they will surrender the money:)

Hi, Mike:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  It IS a crazy thing that you can't cash a USPS money order at a USPS office...

Hi, Michelle:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Agreed- everyone else can't print it, it's just when Joe Public needs it that they can't seem to find any!
