National Good Neighbor Day- September 28th!  Let’s All Try Being One!

September 28 is National Good Neighbor Day so it’s time to see if we have what it takes to be a good neighborsgood neighbor.  Back in the early 1970’s Becky Mattson and her husband lobbied for Congress to establish a day for neighbors to help each other.  It took some time but in 1978, President Jimmy Carter issued Proclamation 4601 proclaiming a Good Neighbor Day.

Big Woo, you probably think you don't need to know your neighbors.

On the day we were moving into our first home in Florida, there was a knock on the door.  Opening the door, I saw a portly man with 2 highball glasses filled with ice.  He said “I know you’re busy unpacking.  Tell me what you drink; I’ll leave them for you and see you tomorrow!”

That dear man and his family became our extended family here in Florida.

With so many families moving for job changes or other reasons, I wonder how many of us even know those people living around us, above us, or down the street?

We're all neighborsAnd now that everything is global- politics, business, sports, entertainment- our world has become smaller and our neighbors aren’t always the people in the next house.

So for Good Neighbor Day what are some things you can do?

~ The next time you make a big pot of soup or tray of lasagna, consider sharing it with an elderly neighbor, or someone who has been ill.

Gather your neighbors for a community yard sale.   It’s a great way to get everyone together as well as get rid of some “clutter” that is beginning to eat up your space.

Take a "Welcome to the Nieghborhood" basket to a new neighbor. .  You could include important contact numbers; menus for the local delivery services; recommendations for shopping and other services.  Put on your creative thinking cap.

~Organize a traveling dinner party- drinks and appetizers at your house; on to the next house for soup or salad; dinner at a third house ending with coffee and dessert at the final house.

Being a Good Neighbor, isn't just about parties.

It's being aware of the needs of those around us.

It's having concern for the well being of others.

It's offering rather than waiting to be asked.

It's being there when you need to be.

National Be a Good Neighbor Day!

Let's All Try Being One.

Kathy, this is such a nice post.  I alwasys try to get to know my neighbors.  It is much easier since adopting a dog since we are out more.  When I sell a home, I always send out 'New Neighbor' postcards introducing the family to the neighborhood and prompting people to stop by to say "hello" to their new neighbors.  With parents permission, I will write the age of their children so neighbors who have children the same age can introduce themselves.  People love it.
