America's Cup sailing yacht, Oracle, turns on its foil at 40+ mph
This is amazing. I can't think of a similar feat in the panoply of sport. This new technology, applied to the sport of kings, is truly revolutionary, in so many ways.
These two yachts simply didn't exist -- no one nowhere had anything like this -- a year ago.
The wing -- not even a sail anymore, but something that works on the same principles as a wing on an airplane -- and foils under the hulls that lift the hulls out of the water lead to boat speeds well over 40 knots (= 46 mph).
That means these two boats are approaching each other at 80 miles per hour.
These yachts can go twice the speed of the wind. Sailing them in winds over 20 mph is dangerous and, during the Cup races, was forbidden.
Watch and think about what is going on here. Look at the forces exerted on the sailor crossing the deck, who nearly loses his balance. Amazing.
