Chris Webster from North Myrtle Beach SC caught my attention with his post about the Shag Capital. This got my interest because my wife Mary Ann and I am taking Shag dance lessons right now at the Atlanta Shag Club and we have heard people talking about the Spring and Fall migration to Myrtle Beach for some big parties.
Chis includes a link to the Shag District http://www.odshagclub.com/ on his post and this will help me should I make the trip, which I would love to do now that I am a shagger. Apologies to anyone from Australia who thinks that means something other than dancing.
I see this image Chris posted of a couple dancing but that doesn't look like Shag, but some other dance, maybe jitterbug. However the video Chris posted is excellent of the SOS, which stands for the Society of Stranders called that because the Shag was started on the beach in Myrtle Beach.
Chris gives us some good information about the history of Shag dancing and beach music. He says it is similar to Swing dancing and the jitterbug which I have also heard. He points out there are over 100 shag clubs, like the Atlanta Shag Club where we took our shag dance lessons last night. And he is right, it more than just dancing but a place to socialize, have a drink, meet new firends. Some great people at the shag clubs.
Chris points out there are Shag contests. I have seen some of these shag dance contests on youtube but I would love to see some in person in North Myrtle Beach SC, the home place of Shag.
When I go to North Myrtle Beach I would surely visit some of the famous Shag Clubs Chris mentioned in his post, like the Atlantic Beach Shag Club. Maybe this will be our next vacation, a visit to North Myrtle Beach SC.
