Has ActiveRain Banned Localisms?

For as long as I can remember, ActiveRain has encouraged localisms. The majority of my blogs have been oriented to local information and local events.

Now, suddenly, we have new guidelines and new restrictions that have been mandated without prior notice.  We are required to designate a blog topic but the list of topics for public blogs does not include local information or local events.

If you understand the reasons for the elimination of local information as local events as appropriate blog topics, I would like to know about the reasoning.

Some of us have difficulties with radical changes that eliminate our normal blog topics that are of interest to the residents of our local communities.

Hmmmm, hadn't caught onto this yet.  I know that there have been an awful lot of changes in the past few days.  Hopefully it all works for the best.

Roy: I was wondering the same thing as I have a localism post tomorrow and could not find a good fit from the available consumer topics.

Roy,

I just put the topic closest to it.. I think it is a blip as in the September contest you had to have at least 5 localism blogs so I am sure it is an oversight!

This is not good, Roy.  And I'm concerned that this is not a "Glitch", but part of ActiveRain's SEO Strategy.   Time will tell.

Hi Roy,

Absolutely not!  Hyper-local content is still the cornerstone of good SEO blogging on ActiveRain.  I would still encourage you to tag every hyper-local post that you write with the location that the blog post is about.  If you tag the proper location, the post will still show up on the appropriate hyper-local page.

The new topics that we have implemented on ActiveRain is just the first step that we have taken in order to make ActiveRain content more accessible to the every day consumer.  As we continue to make improvements to the site, we will pay special attention to hyper-local pages and make it so that all of the good local information that ActiveRain members write is more easily discoverable.

In the not too distant future, consumers will be able to go to hyper-local pages on ActiveRain and find the exact content that they are looking for.  Instead of going to the page about Seattle, and hoping that a post about mortgages in Seattle has been written recently (for example), consumers will be able to go the Seattle page and specifically search and filter for posts about mortgages that were written by real estate professionals in Seattle.  As we implement these changes, you can be assured that a category for local news and events will be available.

I would like to apologize for the glitches that we've had in the last few days. We have been making some large changes recently in order to make sure that all of the great content that ActiveRain bloggers produce is easily found by consumers.  The first step of that process was to condense the conent that was already on the site.  We will continue to make improvements to ActiveRain in an attempt to empower our users to more easily create content and be confident that it will be found and read by colleagues and potential clients. Stay tuned!

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I hope you have a great week!

I noticed this too. Also, they finally put the spell check back in comments. I think they made a bunch of changes without thinking them through. Almost made be want to be here less. Just my 2 cents worth. Hope all is well with you, cheers cvc

Roy - I had noticed that change as well!  Somehow, I think little bugs and oversights in these newest of ActiveRain changes will eventually be improved upon and made better.  I think we're going through growing pains.  I'm glad Chris Anderson provided input and insight.  It is likely as he says, "Stay tuned."

Roy, I think it all has a purpose but we can't see the entire picture. I have missed the localism placement but hope that something even better will take place.

Roy, Good to see Chris's response.  I'd been having the same challenge, which Topic to place localism posts into.  Nothing is a clean fit.
