I just started a new book called Mega Creativity by Andrei Aleinikov, Ph.D. The book was written to help us think out of the box or "Five Steps to Thinking like a Genius." So far after the first three exercises, I am: 1) either daring or stupid (maybe both), 2) normal, and 3) limiting myself by the dictates of others. Not what I would call a stellar start on my way to "Genius" status!
However, I am encouraged because fortunately they did not have a "dull normal" classification. I know you are curious, so here were the questions. Draw a circle on a sheet of paper. Place a dot anywhere on the sheet of paper. My mind headed directly to the top right hand side of the paper, well out of the circle. A genius would have turn the paper over and placed the dot in the middle! The second question was to write an odd number up to ten. Of course, I wrote seven as would millions of us in the huddled masses of the Great Unwashed. One is the number Genius would pick! The third exercise was to pick three random numbers that when placed on a hidden chart revealed three words. My words were Dog, Quark (not misspelled), and Constipation. I was given five minutes to write five sentences using all three of the words. My first sentence was, "My dog, Quark, suffers from constipation!" Anyway, I was able to write five reasonable intelligent sentences in only three minutes. My arm still hurts from patting myself on the back! However, here is the rub. "Why did I stop at five sentences when I still had two minutes left?" Great question. Why do we stop when we think that we have done enough? An interesting challenge.
As with every challenge to renew one's mind, we have a choice! Poo Poo it, or stick our toes into the water. I choose the latter. I am going to overlay the challenges onto not only my real estate business but also onto my life. How often do I accept the status quo to determine my efforts. Or, are the decisions that I make based upon what a "normal" realtor does. I would love to be in a position to "Think like a Genius!" To be able to turn a new page, to be able to pick a solution that is not "normal", and to go the extra mile to distinguish myself from the rest of the pack! Stay tuned.
If this is the first time that you have read our blog, my wife and I come from a long entreprenuial background. My first career was a sales manager of a radio and television station before I was barely old enough to buy a client a beer. That led to an advertising agency to a recording studio to new product development. After selling our last business, we decided to relocate to our beloved Hutchinson Island Fla from Maine. Our entreprenurial juices has led us into the real estate business. We love where we live in the Colonnades on Hutchinson Island. I usually show homes in my shorts, Florida shirts, and flip-flops! You gotta love it here! Hutchinson Island is one of the best kept secrets in Florida. Check out this listing!
By the way, our home in Maine near the coast is for sale. Make me an offer I cannot refuse!
