My Pet Flying Soon....Need Pet Carrier Recommendation

Yes, the time has come for us to let our dog Gidget go live with my daughter as it is her dog and we have been keeping her for 3 years. She has been in school and is now moving to a larger place that allows pets. I am so heartbroken but need to get her ready to fly.

Gidget Is Going on a Long Plane Ride

So, we are doing the custody transfer in late December and decided we should buy her an approved dog carrier that the airline will allow under the seat. So we went to our local Petco in Beaumont, CA last night and looked at the carriers. They seem so small but so is Gidget, just a 13 lb Terrier.

Here is a stuffed dog we found at the store and put it in the carrier. This stuffed dog with a big head is bigger than Gidget.

Gidget Is Going on a Long Plane RideWe read where it is better to get a soft side so we can bend it down if it doesn't fit exactly. We want to buy one now so we can get her used to riding in it before she leaves.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good carrier?

Do they give a full body pat down to pets?

No, but they make the passenger take the pet out and carry it through the metal detector and then the carrier goes through the scanner. I guess they cannot be too careful. Hopefully they will not make her take the collar off as she could get scared and start running through the airport. I am hopeful it will go smoothly and she is a friendly dog.

Kristin, many years ago, we flew home with a new Westie puppy and had one of those rigid plastic crates. It worked out well. We also took two dogs with us when we moved to England, again, rigid plastic crates because that time the dogs had to fly as cargo. I would say as long as the airline approves of the soft bag and the dog is comfortable in it, it should be ok.

Hi Silvia,

Yes I think your are right. I have been looking at Virgin Airlines as they have a direct flight and more leg room so that should work out OK,

Do you have to buy a seat? Or is the dog considered 'carry on' baggage?

Hi Than,

No, you do not have to buy a seat but you have to pay to carry on the pet. South West charges $75 and Virgin Airlines charges $100. Then the pet must stay in the carrier in the floor the entire flight. They are strict on the size as they can fit under the seat to the front. I believe most airlines do not allow pets to ride in the cargo area anymore. Plus the pet in the carrier is considered to be your carry on luggage.

Hi Kristin,  I have 2 small dogs and have used a Sherpa bag.   I have the one with wheels.  They are soft sided, soft insdie and the dog can see out.  I also have a Tuto bag recommended by a breeder that I haven't used yet.  It's big enough for both my dogs, but is more firm although not a hard-sided crate.    It must be very hard to let Gidget go after 3 years.
