My Showcase of Florida- Come See for Yourself!

I thought I’d live in Texas, my birthplace, for my whole life, and when we moved to Florida for my husband’s job, I thought my life was over.

However, my neighbor told me 2 very important things:

1. Root where you are planted

2. Wait until you spend your first winter in Florida…. you’ll never leave.

It’s been over 26 years and with the exception of a few moves for work, we’re still here!

Why Florida?

1. Just like Texas… it’s big.. and big means varied.  If you visit Tallahassee, our state capital, it’s almost like you’re in Georgia with its beautiful forests.  It can take you all day to drive from the panhandle of Florida down to Key West!  And when you arrive in the Keys, it’s like being in a different country except everyone speaks your language and you don’t need a passport.  And you’re in a different time zone: Key’s Time!

2.Good weather all year!  The average winter temperature in South Florida, for example, is 68 degrees!  And up in North Florida, the average temperature in the winter is 53 degrees!  Not bad!!!

3 There’s always something you can do, and you don’t have to worry about doing it with millions of other people!  During the season there are art festivals, farmer’s markets  and fairs going on just about every weekend.  You can go to the Delray St Patrick’s Day Parade, for example, and while it is growing each year because of its popularity, it’s still easy to attend.

4 The Beaches, lakes and rivers - Florida has 4038 square miles of total water area, 663 miles of beaches, 1197 miles of coastline, and more than 11,000 miles of rivers, streams and waterways.  You can kayak, canoe, swim, surf, fish, scuba dive, water ski, Paddleboard or most anything else you’d want to do in,under or on the water!

5 Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach-  It is where we’ve chosen to live and why not…… it was recognized as the “Most Small Fun Town in the United States.”

6. You’ll never want for visitors because all of your friends and family will want to come for a visit….. especially between December and March!

Great motivating post Kathy -- we live here for many reasons and many adventures

Imagine how shocked Dale would be to see the impact of development as she lived in Perrine when it was a prairie.

We just visited Florida last month and loved it.  It's always so relaxing to get down to the beach and just listen to the ocean.  We'll be back down there in January as well!

I know lots of folks who love Florida, just like you :-)  I wish AR would fix the issue I am having...when I post drafts, from say a day or so ago, to today or whenever, they don't show up on the live following list/blog roll/etc that day, rather the draft/old day!! Sooo frustrating, since I have been dealing with this for a week!

Hi Kathy - your post reads like a love letter to your state.  Florida is a much better place because of your decision to stay.

Carol-- I’d bet there are a lot of us here… those who thought we’d be here for just a short time.

Debbie- it’s so easy for those on the east coast.. just get on I-95 and head south.

Wayne- east coast or west coast, it doesn’t matter, does it.

Donald- exactly…. we love the weather especially in January when we’re listening to the national weather forecast.

Lenn- I forgot to mention, for you, gun ranges AND fishing!

Sheila- remember that picture in February.

Barbara- I will always consider myself a Texan who is living in Florida.

Scott- if you can get Gronkowski and Amendola back I’d go with the Pats.

Jill- it’s why we have snowbirds!

Sharon- come visit your folks!!!

Mark- oops, I forgot the equestrian communities like Caloosa!

Joanna- wouldn’t that be wonderful… we could spend an afternoon on Atlantic.

Joni- who knows, I’m due for a trip  back to Texas.

Janis- ok….what did the AR bugs do?

Dale- I know exactly where that is!!!

Patricia- the Keys are like another country… it’s a slower more relaxed pace, very casualand I love going there.

Eileen- I don’t think he’d recognize that area at all.  Look at Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens.

Jared and Amanda- Let me know if you’re on this coast!!!

Alexandra- I love your photos of your farmer’s market and the beach, as well.

Kristin- they’re working on it.  I just realized that my post was posted twice.  I posted it, then went back in because I’d needed to  correct something.  Now I see it’s there twice.

Michael- very sweet of you.  We enjoy it here, especially being so close to the ocean.

BARFF- we would never be able to write a post on it. well we could but  goodness knows what the comments would be.

Patty- it’s what we love about this area.

Kathy, you are a great ambassador for the State of Florida. You give it plenty of soul - which is a big one in my book. Thanks for opening up my eyes - there's more to Florida than meets the eye.

I always remember my friend Mary, before moving down to Florida, telling me about her brother's reaction to an invitation to come to her home up north for the holidays.  "Why," he asked, "would I want to leave paradise to be cold and miserable up there."  He clearly sold her on the idea and she packed up, lock, stock and barrel and joined him in paradise some years later.

You certainly had me sold, even before I saw your photo.

This is a very inviting blog. So many Maryland residents are moving to Florida that the state is much concerned with the transfer of wealth.

Kathy - great photos and facts about Florida.  Having been there a few times, I can attest to the very different scenery and climate/weather.  Loved the Keys and been to the Panhandle several times.  What a great state!  Congrats on being included in Kerrie's State blog!

Debb- it's a lot like Texas... you can go from one end to the other and see a different terrain.

Phil- I think some may think it's all beaches.

Bobbie- come on down.  Hope on I-95 and head south.

Barbara- I really do.  There is so much I miss about Texasand it is always in my heart, though.

Conrad- true, but my husband's work planted us in Florida.

Lou- and we're just getting into the "fun" season!

Geri- my husband has said the same thing.  We rarely travel during the winter, unless we have to.

Roy- Many of our residents are snowbirds and maintain 2 residences.  Spend the winter here and you'll see why.

Gita- There are so many that some businesses will close for the summer.  You can tell a big difference in the traffic.

Jan- I love the Keys as well.
