Safety First Ladies! What Precautions Do You take?

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential California Realty

Last week a brutal attack was made on a female Real Estate Agent as she showed a house.

The prospective buyer asked her to show him a foreclosure in the area.  She met him there in broad daylight and he proceeded to viciously attack, rape and stab her.  This horrendous story reminds us that we need to be extra careful.  Terrible things can happen and we need to be prepared.

The good news is that the perpetrator has been apprehended and I hear she will recover...at least physically.

My mentor has been sure to make sure I understand what can happen and the precautions we should take, especially as women when showing a home or holding an open house.  In fact, we were holding a house open not to long ago and two guys came in that made us immediately feel uncomfortable.  Somehow you just know when things are not right.  Luckily there were two of us and we made sure to stand near the exit as they looked around.

I would love to hear some tips and tricks from other agents that help keep them safe.  I have read some good things like having a CODE WORD when calling the office.  Something like "I need the information in the red book" to whoever answers to let them know they may potentially be in danger.

I know I will be talking to my broker to see what we may have similarly in place and would love to hear what others are doing.

My prayers go out to this poor lady to wish her a very speedy recovery.

Unfortunately, This isn't the first story I have heard like this!  I think that if it's someone you don't know, it's always a good idea to have another agent with you... or at the very least, let your office know where you are going and what time you're expected back so that they can make sure you're ok!

Our office has a code word set up.  We also tell new agents when training them to let someone know where you are and who you are with.  It is also a good idea to meet new clients at your office first and you can even ask for a copy of their drivers license before going out.  Also, Have an emergency number programmed into your 1 touch dialing on your phone!  Sometimes our local board offers some self defense classes as well.

How scary to hear stuff like that!  I certainly glad the realtor is ok and they caught the person who attacked her.  I think it is great idea for you guys to have a code word.

I always let my husband know where I am going to be showing and how long I expect to be.  Then I call him when I am done to let him know I am ok.  On those all-day showings, I usually check in a time or two just so he knows I'm ok.  Occasionally (and I know this wouldn't work for most, but my husband is retired) if I am not sure about a new client, my husband will even tag along.  Noone has questioned our story of him being my assistant on these ride-alongs.
