Halloween has a special effect: we have enjoyed it as children, and we surely enjoy it now as adults. It is now when all our creativity and imagination can come to light, and we can use it to create outstanding, original and inexpensive indoor Halloween decorations. Every retailer sells Halloween costumes, party supplies and decorations, but if you don’t want to spend several hundred dollars for a one-day holiday, then here you can find some of the most inspired decoration ideas that you can use at home. Besides, the following craft projects are very fun and entertaining as well:

Halloween Decoration Ideas

1. Spooky Banners And Garlands

Banners and garlands are the centerpieces of every Halloween celebration, but it is very important to make sure that you place them in the right spots. All you need to do is to print the words on card stock (you can simply print “Halloween” or “Welcome”), then add some decorative paper to make the banners stand out from the rest, fold it and glue it accordingly. Some ribbon pieces can also be added for extra style, but make sure that they match the general Halloween décor of your home. If you do not have special card stock, then you can even use coffee filter as the possibilities are endless!

2. Special Homemade Lanterns

Lanterns along with the classic carved pumpkins will be the “Stars of the night”, but why buy a lantern when you can easily create one at home? These lanterns look wonderful at your front door, they are inexpensive and they can be created within minutes. Basically, all you need to do is to print some Halloween themed drawings or patterns (bats, skulls, witches, zombies and whatever other scary thing that crosses your mind) on special vellum paper and then glue the pieces all together, so that they form a square. On the other hand, you can make an inexpensive and classic paper lantern by adding all sorts of creepy crawlers to it – spiders are a must-have!

Insert a small round candle inside this homemade picture lantern and that’s it! However, make sure never to leave the lanterns unattended!

3. Pay Attention To The Food!

Who said that Halloween decorations are all about the surroundings? The food and drinks are extremely important as well, so why not get creative with them? You can make a scary Halloween cake quickly and without the fuss – a spider cake or a skull cake will never be old-fashioned. Also, you can serve all sorts of creepy snacks on a plate as well: all you need is a bit of imagination to carve fruits and vegetables and to make them look like creepy shrunken heads.

4. The Music

No Halloween décor is complete without some creepy music in the background – however, if you do not have creepy sound effects to scare your guests and the trick or treaters, then you can make your own or play some opera. You can never go wrong with opera!

5. Homemade Coffins

If you plan to throw a vampire themed Halloween party, then you certainly know that coffins must not miss from the overall décor. The good news is that you can easily make gravestones and hyper realistic coffins out of cardboard boxes. However, for extra scariness you can buy old mannequins, disassemble them, add some fake blood on their limbs and then simply insert them into the coffin. In addition to this, you can also find spiders and other specific creepy decorations at the local dollar store – these can be used to add extra spice to your homemade decorations.

6. Black Paper Shadows

Black paper shadows should not miss from any Halloween party, so make sure to cut out some nice patterns (cats, rats, bats or spiders are the most appreciated these days) and then simply hang the shadow cutout. Make sure there is a light source somewhere behind the shadow: battery-lit candles are usually the most inexpensive and efficient choice in this situation, therefore if you are looking for a cheap Halloween decoration that will boost the room’s effect, then this is certainly the one!

7. Spiders!

There is nothing creepier for your guests than seeing a huge spider and plenty of spider webs right from the entrance. As you may already know, the best place to hang spider web is in the corners of your room, but spiders are a bit more versatile from that point of view as you can either hang them from walls or you can drape them all over your furniture. You can get the spiders from the local dollar store or make your own colored spider: if you are creative enough, you can even design a mobile spider!

8. Plastic Hands That Reach Out From Beyond The Wall

If you want to go a mile further, then you can easily create or buy some 3D creepy severed plastic hands that you can either glue to the wall or mount them. They will look as if they are trying to reach out to you from beyond the wall! If you are willing to invest in this innovative Halloween decoration, you might even find hands that move or shake – your guests will surely appreciate that!

9. Don’t Forget About The Hanging Decorations!

In addition to the decorations mentioned above, the hanging decorations are also very important. A skeleton, a fake vampire with a long cape, bats or zombie brides – you can easily hang them from your ceiling, provided that they are lightweight. This is certainly a very nice touch to the general Halloween décor, and you can even put a fan somewhere in the background, just to make sure that the hanging decorations will move back and forth. Now that’s creepy!

10. Don’t Neglect The Entrance!

Your door is the first thing your guests come into contact with, so make sure you do not neglect it. If you have a fog machine, then make sure to use it – however, if you do not want one yet you want to throw the best Halloween party in the neighborhood, then you can easily rent one for the night. Combine this fog with cobwebs scattered all across the doorway and you have the recipe for a truly scary Halloween night that none of your guests will forget too soon!

I have a few of these neigbors! One has bloody hands hanging out of the trunk of their car and it always seems to scare the little ones in the neighborhood.
