Struggling with my dress code!

I am sure that we have all been through or may be going through the "Fake it until you make it" or "Dress to impress" stage in any endeavor. I know I have. Or, maybe I still am!  So when it comes to being a realtor, I seriously ask... how do I dress?

It is a real dilemma for me. Since my days in advertising and marketing when I had to "dress to impress," I haven't had to think too much about my attire. You can imagine the dress code for a blueberry farmer, a manufacturer of insect repellent, or a distributor of predator urines, or a grilling woods Guru!  But, how do I dress as a Realtor?

Here we are, living in the Colonnades, on one of the most laid back places in Florida, Hutchinson Island.  Although the Colonnades has restrictions on pick ups and motorcycles , Hutchinson Island is where the Lexus, the 1990 Ford Pickup, and the Harley's, not only meet, but share the same beaches, the same restaurants, and the same love of Hutchinson Island!  So, now how do I dress?  Seriously, I am looking for advice.

My normal attire is reasonably priced shorts, expensive boat shoes and belt, and almost any Hawaiian shirt that I can find at Goodwill for under $5.00!  My goal is not necessarily to impress but to reflect the personality of the Colonnades community and Hutchinson Island.

I am sure if I were listing a $5,000,000 home in West Palm Beach and I was showing it to a famous actor, investor, or athlete who showed up in jeans, sneaks, and t-shirt, I should be dressed to the nines!  Or.... should I?

If this is the first time that you have read our blog, my wife, Pam, and I come from a long line of entrepreneurial enterprises.

After selling our last business, we relocated to our beloved Hutchinson Island, Florida where we decided that real estate should be our next adventure.  Since then we have met some really great people here and love helping them with their individual real estate needs.  I have tried to make my website as informative as possible.  However, if you have questions, Pam and I are looking for almost any excuse to go exploring!

Watch some of the home shows like house hunters international and you will see ideas around the country and the world.

From the island realtors who wear flipflops and shorts to the ny luxury who wear $2000 suits to the California agents who get driven in towncars and dress to the nines.

Rule of thumb is to dress only 1 level above your client.

I would think you should dress to reflect yourself and your community. Dressing like the client is the way many people decide but it also takes away some of your individuality. Obviously, someone looking to buy in Hutchinson Island is looking for a laid back, peaceful place and do not want to see you in a black suit! It would take away from the vision they had!   And there are people, like myself, who wear boat shoes all the time. What I wear has nothing to do with how well I am doing! As long as you are presentable, clean and comfortable, I have not heard of anyone losing a client because of it.   BTW do you just sell in Hutchinson Island?

Hi Karen, Thank you for your comment.  While Hutchinson Island is basically my farm, I have listings and sales "off Island" in Port St Lucie.   All the best, Ken
